Yep, I finally gave this a shot..

I need to sand them, which I will have to borrow...but...I cut it out with the table saw...and filed the corners down to size, and cut the holes on the bottom with a screwdriver...

They fit incredibly well...

I plan to paint the edges with truck bed liner and stain the tops...

Look pretty good to me there lil bro.

Damn you've gotten really good with woodworking. Impressive!

As with most jobs, the right tool for the job is always a necessity.

    Thanks Paul...

As for the right tool for the job...man I wish! lol...

Check out my 'file' - this worked down those corners... LOL

And the 4 holes on the bottom of the caps were done with a flathead screw driver and a hammer...

The cuts were done with my table saw out in the garage...

Thanks...and yep, make do is what I gotta do I suppose...

Now...Any ideas on how to cover the top while I coat the edges with spray paint and truck bed liner??

My thoughts was masking tape and paper maybe...but would this hold up to the spray paint and truck bed liner???

Very nice woodwork, sid. But... I just have to ask... what is it with you a spray-on truck bed liner? I mean, it's durable, but does it really need to be?

Personally, I'd leave em unfinished, with maybe a clearcoat to help protect. But, it is your project and you can do with it whatever you please.

Again, nice work, especially considering the tools.

Edit- I just noticed that you said you were painting the _edges_ and _staining_ the top. Sounds good :D
    Ludicrous gibs!

Yeah, that should work. Use an exacto knife or razor to cut the rounded corners out of the masking tape so that you have a clean sharp edge.

I guess you are worried about getting spray under the masking tape? Try spraying down at a 45 degree angle instead of straight ahead.

    Thats a good idea Paul....

How about 45 degree angle...spraying with the tape and paper...I think that would work...hmmmmmm

I dunno, I'm not to worried about smoothing out the sides, truck bed liner is rough...I'm more so worried about the top...

    See...

A guy in Kansas is making me new top and bottom caps out of real wood, and is staining them Rosewood....

I plan to stain the top of these in oak...

And I plan to sand down the old/scratched caps and send them to the guy in Kansas for a new high gloss black finish...

This way, when/if I sell them - I'll have high gloss black, oak, and rosewood...

may make some cherry caps too

Spray down like the previous poster said, and use a round metal rod of some type to burnish down the edges of the masking tape so that it is sealed good. The blue 3M auto body masking tape might work better, but it is kind of expensive for just one project.

    Nice work!

It's the bed liner trim that is sucking wind...do more with just the clearcoat brother, they look good!

The problem with just clearcoating that is that you have all the horizontal laminate levels showing which looks cheesy.

Personally, I don't like the truck bed liner in the mix either. There's no fluidity in the fabric, side, and top of the cap. It looks too busy

sid , there is iron on laminate that you can put on the edge of the plywood, its made by bandit and real easy to use just iron on and trim with a razor. looks real good to, you should give it a try.
