Din Output ?

Need some schoolin fellas...

My Rotel 980 say`s

continuous power output
120w per channel, min RMS both channels driven into 8 ohms

DIN power output
220w per channel (1kHz,4 ohms, 1% THD)

Bridged power
360w (mono) min. RMS driven into 8 ohms

My question is...
WTF does DIN mean..?
is it just a way of saying 220w w/4 ohm speaks

I`m going back and forth from my 7`s to 9`s and don`t want to screw anything up, because on one page it say`s ...

output........speakers 8 ohms nominal
and another page say`s
in stereo use 4-16 ohm speaks
bridged...8-16 ohm speaks

I want to use one 980 per speak but I`m not thinkin thats a good idea...

whaadaya think..?

thanks for your INPUT...(get it)

I know ....but it`s been a REAL long day/week

Yeah, dog, I think I got it; you want input on that output. The DIN (Deutsches Institut fur Normung, German Institute for Standards)is a German(figures)organization which publishes quality standards for electronic equipment and many other items. That rating that you quote is simply one of those that they approve of.

When bridging the two channels of an amp both positive terminals are fed into the speaker, but with the phase of one reversed 180 degrees so that it doesn't just run head on into the output from the other amp and cancel out, but instead it pulls in the same direction that the other one is pushing. The result is a theoretical increase of four times the power, but inefficiencies in practice reduce it to maybe three times, as in the Rotel rating. It may not be a good idea to bridge into a 4 ohm speaker, since the amp would in effect "see" it as if it was a 2 ohm load.

That Rotel is a very powerful amp as is and it may well be that you'd get no audible benefit from a more powerful one. Keep in mind that those speakers use about 1 watt at a comfortably loud average listening level. Split-second peaks may use up to 100 watts or more, depending on factors such as distance of the listener, size of the room, dynamic range of the recording and the average level used for listening.

    Thanks John...

I haven`t tried to bridge them yet, as I thought the 2 ohm load might be the outcome...

Guess I had that one right..!!

I have found that these speaks seem to like the Rotel w/ The Parasound P/HP 850 pre..

I have tried single run, Bi-wire runs, and made some banana plug jumpers, and have tried every configuration with this conclusion...

When single cables are present they sound good, but when I put the jumpers on and ran the cable to the bottom posts, they seemed more full...not as flat...bi-wired they sounded almost like they did with the cable jumpers I made....just a little more powerful..clear and seperated a little better.

I like these speaks, and have sidelined the RT38i`s along with most of the RTxxi line...except for HT...my Yammie doesn`t do a
    4 ohm load well...

I`m assuming the 4 ohm load is cool with the Rotel, as it seems to like the speaks so far...:D

The LSI`s seem to like the SS amp/pre combo better than the Parasound HCA-3500/Dodd tube pre combo...unless I put the juice to em with the Parasound amp...they wake right up, but so do the neighbors...
    :D

It took a couple days to get used to the LSI`s as compared to the RTxxi`s.....but now I think I`ll keep em..!!!

    Thanks again for your "INPUT"

not to kick a dead horse , so to speak ...but..

How would I hook up a single cable from the 980 to a center channel ?
could I just use one side in stereo mode , or would I be loosing info to the speaker by not having both sides sending ?

could I plug the cable into the amp as if it were bridged and just keep it in stereo mode..?

how `bout I run one cable from the top post on the center to the right side of the amp, and the bottom one to the left..?

    thanks for the help...

Nothing bad will happen if you just use one of the two cahnnels in the 980, but....

If your center is bi-ampable, you can Y-split the input to the 980 and then wire one channel to one pair of speaker posts, and the other to the other...

Why leave 120 W sitting around with nothing to do?
    More later,
