Thats a tough call Steve. MANY are convinced that SACD and DVD-A are dying formats. As a mass market product they are probably correct. I think there will still be a niche market for at least SACD. There are several high-end mfgs. making SACD machines which makes me think the likes of Chesky, Telarc, FIM, Linn etc.... will continue to produce SACD titles (albiet in limited numbers). My current SACD player is starting to have mechanical issues (I'm now kicking myself for selling the CE222ES) and I am going to purchase something to relace it...but I'm not sure which route to take. I have way too many titles to abandon SACD and besides...I like the format. I'm leaning toward a quality redbook CDP and a single purpose SACD player. (it means I can buy MORE gear:D).

An interesting side note...I am a member of BMG Music Cub, and for the first time ever the featured selection is the SACD hybrid version of Layla. I'm not really sure what that means. Are they trying to promote the format...because some have said that Sony is getting out of the SACD business. Or are they trying to unload unsold product. The feature of the month rarely falls into the latter category so maybe there is still some hope.

Although I'm about to jump onto the DVD-A/SACD bandwagon, I don't think the formats will last too long. We've got Blu Ray and HD-DVD coming out soon with much more storage capacity, and therefore much more room for higher quality music. It might take a while, but I have a feeling there will be a music format associated with these disc formats. Just have to wait for the pro audio equipment to come out for it along with the disc players.

Sony just announced upcoming SACD-capable players for its regular and ES line. Also, Sony (in Europe) has announced 2 upcoming rock SACD releases.

At January's CES in Las Vegas, all the SACD supporters showed new wares....Pioneer, Samsung, Esoteric/TEAC, Toshiba, etc. Sherwood also announced 2 universal players and those just showed up on J&R's site as pre-orders.

There're rumors of upcoming Pink Floyd SACD releases. The Moody Blues catalog is definitely being remixed for SACD. Genesis already finished remixing its classic "The Lamb" and even announced a release date for it before postponement.

As of this post, I think the title count at sa-cd.net is at 2,919. So, title #3,000 may come by end of April.

I seriously doubt SACD/DVD-A will be a mass-market consumer format. Mass consumers do not care that much about sound quality, especially in today's world. Downloading is the thing for them. The hi-rez formats will remain niche items like Mobile Fidelity/DCC gold CDs. Most people say the format are geared to a certain demographic group, but one wonders whether a teenager will appreciate Beyonce in multi-channel playback (I actually have the Beyonce album on Sony multi-channel hybrid SACD).

I just went Universal in the HT, so that will buy me many more years of enjoyment.....and when a victor emerges from all the other BS....I'll be ready for an upgrade anyways.

I could care less which one is better or worse.....I'll let the pro's figure that out and wait to be picked up by the train.

    Sony Steps Up Components, Systems

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 3/21/2005

Las Vegas — Sony stepped up its Dream System and ES-series receiver selection, launched its first PC-networked shelf system, and expanded its selection of SACD/DVD-Video players with HDMI outputs that up-scale video sources to the high-definition 720p or 1,080i formats.

Here's what Sony unveiled to dealers at its recent line show, here:

Among six new Dream Systems, three are Sony's first with HDMI output, all capable of HD up-scaling. All are DVD/SACD-equipped.

SACD: Several new SACD/DVD-Video players feature up-scaling HDMI output. Previously, the company offered only one SACD/DVD player with up-scaling HDMI output, at $300. The new HDMI models include the $499 400-disc SACD/DVD changer, a single-disc model at $200 and an ES series reference player.

In an expanded 11-SKU component-SACD selection, most new models feature DVD-Video playback.

ES Series: The series gets its first wall-hanging speaker system to complement flat-panel displays; a new reference SACD/DVD-Video player; and three new receivers, including its highest priced receiver to date at $2,000.

The reference SACD/DVD player, at $1,199, features up-scaling HDMI output, iLink SACD output, vertical-edge compensation to eliminate stair-step distortion and a 14-bit 216MHz video DAC.

*I edited out the non-SACD related news.

Let's not forget the brand new SACD players from Cary, http://www.caryaudio.com/products/audio/cd306sacd.shtml and Musical Fidelity,http://www.musicalfidelity.com/mf/en/News/news.jsp?nid=3785

And even Sony, who some folks say is backing away from the format, is upping the ante with their 'High End" Qualia line in Japan by now marketing it in Europe and the US.

It seems to me that Sony is covering their bases by putting SACD in most of their new good quality DVD players, a new $1,000 + stand alone SACD/CD player and now a $10,000 SACD "Playback System".
