Today's High End Adventure

You won't believe where I found some kick **** tube gear for sale -- there's a musical instruments store a few miles from my house that has two rooms filled with high end gear. Never knew it was there. Strange as it seems, the store is located in the middle of an impoverished neighborhood. Been there for years. They carry a full line of Antique Sound Lab stuff, some Grommes, LA Audio and others. They also have a complete line of Omega and Cain & Cain speakers -- all full range stuff. BTW, the most expensive speakers ($12,500) sounded like crap.
Get this -- all of the setups were sourced off a cheap-****, pint-sized, four ounce Radio Shack DVD player. I was flabbergasted. Why the f**k would you have expensive tube gear and speakers run off a $39 DVD player? The sales guy said they were working on creating their own line of DACs, so I suppose this was a stop gap measure. Who knows? Anyway, the best sounding speakers were a pair of Omega bookshelves (don't recall model number). Very sweet. Gorgeous looking real wood on all of the speakers.
Now that I've attempted to make my own full range speakers, there's absolutely no way in the world I'd spend $1,000+ on a pair of speakers that have no damn crossovers. Just get a good craftsman or DIY for a fraction of the cost.
Nevertheless, it was a very interesting trip. Decent prices, too. The ASL AQ1001 DT typically sells for $995, but was $759 at this place. Next time I'll take a few CDs and my CD player (geez!) to see how their systems ought to sound.

Very cool. I think some guitar stores sell tubes too. But never heard of high end gear in a music shop. I plan to get a violin one day, maybe I'll run into a magic shop like you.
