Hk DPR2005 and LSi speakers

Hi,

I'm considering purchasing 2xLSi15s, LSiC, 2xLSi7s for my planned home theater. My room is 12ft wide by 20ft long, so the distance between the tv and ears is even a little less.

I'm considering an HK DPR2005 receiver which is rated 120w/ch (driving 7.1ch) @ 8ohms. HK is considered to sound a little "warm".

1. Does anybody think that the HK and LSi speakers are sonically matched (i.e warmth/brightness?

2. Does the HK have enough power to drive the LSi's so that I can fully appreciate the sonics of the speaker, especially the base?

1. The LSi line is pretty neutral, not bright at all. Very dependant on the sources. So, if the HK is warm, you get warm sound.

2. No way jose. For a full LSi setup (or even just an LSi 2ch setup) you need something a notch or two above.

I'm not saying it won't work, it just wouldn't be optimal or do the speakers justice.

Thanks. What do you recommend for wattage? (btw HK specs are usually very conservative compared to what they print in their literature for some reason, so perhaps there is more juice in the DPR).

Wattage isn't nearly as important as current, and various other things. You may want to consider a seperate amp for the LSi speakers.

Is the HK 120wpc with all channels driven? Is it rated for a 4ohm load? The LSi line is 4ohms nominal, and can even dip to 2ohms. You'll need something with some serious current and true power ratings with all channels driven at the same time for that.

Seriously consider getting a seperate amp, or at least leave yourself room to add one later.

If money isn't a huge problem I'd say go with a 5 channel amp that will give you 300+wpc if you want to really let you LSi15's sing and give them some good headroom. Or if you just want a reciever take phuz's advice and get a B&K or Sunfire AVR that pushes out serious power, nothing you find at Circuit City is going to meet your needs IMO.

If there is a budget, I suggest a 250-300wpc stereo amp for the 15's and grab a 150-200wpc 3 channel amp or monoblocks for the rest of the speakers.

The HK specs are conservative, but the LSi's like serious power - so if you're going to go through the trouble of getting 15's, drive at least them with a respsectable amount of high current wattage.

Thanks for your response. The HK is 120w/ch with all 7.1 ch driven. There is no info if its rated for 4ohms though and I'm not certain of the amperage. I've heard that HK specs are very conservative though (because they measure true values). Perhaps I should give them a call to double check. Cheers.

stay away from the DPR's unless you have efficient 8 ohm speakers. They just simply do not have any balls to them like their AVR line. Don't short change your LSi's, they'll suffer and you'll always feel like you're getting screwed on the SQ of them.

I'm driving 5 LSi7's with AVR-7100 and it does the job great. It's a huge receiver compared to the DPR-2005 though, most likely due to a big 70A power supply. I'm not sure if I would try the 15's with it but I'm sure it wouldn't have any problems with the 9's.

If you get the 2005, get a separate 2ch amp for the 15's. The rest can be driven by the receiver.
