Cream Reunion Concert?

How about it? Anybody heard about this one night and one night only event reportedly happening at the same site they gave their farewell concert in 1969, Royal Albert Hall? If so, fill me in.
THIS would be worth the Pay-per-View charge and then some. Clapton redeems himself IN MY EARS for 35+ years of mediocrity.

Don't anybody even THINK about going anywhere with the Cream lovin' thing

From royalalberthall.com:
"PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS TOTALLY SOLD OUT
Its true! After much speculation the eagerly anticipated Cream reunion will take place this May at the Royal Albert Hall. In what will be one of the must see shows of this decade, legendary rock group, Cream- Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton, will play for four nights only.
The Royal Albert Hall looms large in Creams history as home to their last ever dates as a band in 1968 and so it is only fitting that Cream will be reunited at the historic venue for these amazing concerts"

I thought this was going to be too good to be true, but I guess I were wrong. FOUR NIGHTS!
Thanks Tide!
Go back to the Star Wars thread John, this ain't no disco.

Probably one of the most anticipated music events for us "older", uhm...I mean wiser members here. I really hope they can pull it off. I've seen footage of the Who and they were mediocre. I enjoyed the Page/Plant reunion and towards the end of the 2nd tour Page was on fire and Plant had recovered 75% of his voice from the day. But they were not even a misqitoe bite on John Bonhams **** in comparison. Granted only 2 original members were involved. Overall as success, but a let down to those expecting LZ.
I just hope it can meet the fans expectations. I'm trying to be realistic about the whole thing, but trying to recreate the vibes from the late 60's is very hard to do. We as fans usually have high expectations for these types of re-unions because we want it to be like it was.
All that being said I hope they release a DVD of the concert and I hope it goes really, really well. Clapton hasn't done anything to impress me lately. The last effort I enjoyed was Un-Plugged.

Let's hope so! I think EC is technically one of the best guitarists out there. Stylistically (i.e. originality) I'd have to give him a 6.
Like most of us, I'm prejudiced by personal experience. My first live exposure to Eric was during his junked-out phase. He was so wasted that he stood back and let George Terry play lead for the whole gig (which was still a great concert.) A few months later, Freddie King gave him a handhold out of the gutter and took him on tour in Japan. Ironically, a man killing himself with alcohol probably saved Clapton's life by getting him off heroin and giving him a refresher course in what Mayall had earlier taught him.
Clapton is one of the most consistently interviewed players around. I've yet to hear him give King and Mayall the credit and respect they deserve. Mayall put him on the bill for his 70th birthday concert (an excellent live recording, by the way), and praised EC at one point during the gig with "it just doesn't get any better than that!." My hope is Clapton, Bruce and Baker will have several guest spots during the concerts. Mayall should be number one on that list. Perhaps then there will have been a redemption? -
Speaking of Mayall. Anybody heard "Lost Session" with Albert King? A great cd you should pick-up if you can. More of a Jazz feel than an all out blues explosion.
Here's a review that sums it up perfectly.(shamelessly lifted from the CDNOW site)
Well since John Mayall has just had his 70th birthday concert released on DVD Blues fans should be interested his highly original and unusual teaming with the late great Albert King. The set was recorded at Wolfman Jack's home studio in L.A. in just one day August 20, 1971 and features a line up that was to become part of Mayall's Jazz-Fusion ideas in the 1970s.
This LP is very different. Albert plays with no effects, feedback or sustain. It's just plain straight ahead Blues. He also sings in mostly guitar keys instead of his usual Jazz keys. Mayall contributes all of the song's frameworks and King wrote the lyrics- mostly from his other songs and his expansive knowledge of old blues lyrics from Johnson, Brown, Robert Nighthawk, Elmore James, and many more!
This album was discovered in the Stax vaults when their tape collections were handed over to Fantasy Records in the 1980s. It was never released because it didn't sound like Stax, or the Blues at the time. There are many great tunes on this collection, but "Sun Gone Down-takes 1 & 2" have to be at the top. A great slow blues- one of King's best. "Brand New Razor" is my second favourite tune. It really jumps! "Money Lovin Woman" showcases King's famous talking blues ability. In fact the whole set is really great, different and interesting. I was surprised that in the recording of the set "Jammin with the Blues Greats" in the early 1980s Mayall and King played together again. It is curious that they didn't do one of these tunes.

I hear what you guys are saying, especially regarding Mayall. He gave a lot of folks their first real gigs, Peter Green and Mick Taylor come to mind, I guess as well as Fleetwood and McVie who both leave me cold.
Clapton dropped off my radar screen as soon as Cream disbanded. Blind Faith was terrible, I can't even start to comment on how much I dislike the Derek & The Dominoes stuff, I saw him live at the Fillmore East with Bonnie and Delaney and he added nothing to the performance. I will reserve comment on everything he's done since that.
The height of his instrumental prowess FOR ME, came with Crossroads off Wheels of Fire. The Live Cream albums, both vols. 1 and 2 also contained some great stuff.
As far as guest performers, I think it would be AMAZING if Felix Pappalardi showed up. Maybe he'll bring Jimi and Frank with him if he does.
Nothing like a little common ground to patch things up huh Heiney? You're not so bad after all.

Quick question (don't want to hijack the thread): Do you have the DVD? I have the CD and, in reading the the DVD notes online, it appears the warm up cuts (Grits Ain't Groceries and Jacksboro Highway) were dropped from the DVD production. Is that the case? If so, what a shame! Buddy Wittington (my favorite guitar slinger) and the Bluesbreakers nailed it on the warm up IMO.

Hijack away man. It's a good thread here!

Mike, sorry if my post was confusing, but I don't have the DVD, yet! I was quoting a review by someone else that summed up what I thought was a good review of the "Lost Session" cd. That review mentioned the DVD in question. I do plan on getting it and also the "Crossroads Guitar Fest", which I've heard is excellent. But I believe I read somewhere they ommited a set w/Otis Rush or Buddy Guy that was outstanding. I read so many things sometimes I can't keep it straight.
Anybody else know what I'm talking about with the Crossroads DVD? What are other people's thoughts about it?

Somebody somewhere posted the review of the first night, and said it was kind of tame, with very little instrumental stretching out. Maybe they're just warming up. I'll reserve comment until I get my hands on the DVD. I can't wait.
I hear you loud and clear dragon man.
