Got some more Wharfedales...
I ordered a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's from Audio Advisor for $173 open box. Just needed a small, inexpensive pair of speakers for an upstairs system. When they arrived, the box didn't appear to be opened. The speakers were still wrapped in their original plastic bags. The first thing I noticed is that these speakers are gorgeous (I got the silver color). They have a metallic look and feel to them. They have unique, high quality dual binding posts. Wharfedale suggests that they should be bi-wired. They only weigh about 12 lbs. ea.
I plugged them in my reference tube system and they sounded very, very good right out of the box. They have a glorious midrange, impressive bass (for a 5" driver), and excellent clarity. They were a bit light on the detail, but hopefully that'll come with break-in.
I bought these for their looks, price, and my experience with Wharfedale. I have a pair of their Opus surround speakers with Kevlar drivers and they are awesome. The 9.1's have similar drivers.

Wharfedale had, and still has some great products. I'm not suprised they sound good right out of the box.
As far as AA, and that 'sealed box', it's par for the course. I, and anyone I have spoken with that has ordered an 'open box' or 'demo' item - has ALWAYS received new product.
I see a couple reasons behind this.
A. Some manufacturers won't let their distributors mark-down 'new' product. Simply calling it 'open box' (even though it isn't) allows them to discount, without violating any agreement with the manufacturer.
2. I think they do it to stimulate sales. Mark something open-box, discount it, and maybe the purchaser will tell his friends, or pick up some accessories while he's here.
Cheers,

Steve -- get those 9.6's!! I bet they sound fantastic. The 9.6's were my first choice for replacing my Rti10's for HT, but at the time, the price was a bit too high for my budget ($699). At $486 they're a steal.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

On the top of the home page pull down "Wharfedale" from the "Select Manufacturer" menu. You'll see 24 items. Go to the second of three Wharfedale pages and scroll down. I currently have Wharfedale at my store (the Diamond 8 line) and personally can't stand them. But I have heard a set of Pacific Evo's and they sounded amazing for music, weak for HT. The only thing different between the two lines are cabinets and x-overs. My question is, what's the difference in the Diamond 8 and 9 line? Their website doesn't seem to be to descriptive. We couldn't sell Wharfedale at all, hence why we recently dropped 'em.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.
