More pictures from Iraq...

My brother-in-law sent another batch of pictures. The are now in the northern part of the county where the Kurds are. Parts of this county really are beautiful. He has just asked that we share these pictures whenever possible so that people will see more than just the destruction. There is one picture that I will show first that indicates what terror was there before the US troops arrived. I'll let his words tell what it is about...
They say a picture speaks a thousand words. The pictures I'm sending today are of a shrine in Iraq. The monument and headstones are of the 5000 souls who were killed by chemical weapons that did not exist in Iraq. Each headstone is of a family that was killed. The simple reason they were killed was their ethnic background. They were Kurds. These are some of the nicest people you would want to meet. The convoy that entered the village was greeted by lines of children and adults all cheering the American soldiers. The men said it was almost like WWII. These people view America as their savior. The reason is American soldiers saved them from ethic cleansing. They can now go on with their lives without the fear of a plane flying over gassing them because of who they are and where they live. They are now experiencing something we take for granted: freedom.

    Shack,

Your brother-in-law is an eloquent author and an absolutely amazing photographer. For those too jaded to think that God doesn't move through this world, it's people, and their deeds we are blessed to have men and women of his simple wisdom and grace to prove the truth.

Thanks, once again, for making my day.

Actually- I wansn't gonna say anything, but that photo of the soldier giving out candy could get her in trouble if someone identifies her in a higher headquarters. There is actually an order, maybe part of the General Order, not to give out candy.

Sounds funny, but there is a real sensitivity to this in the brass ranks because of the danger of kids rushing to soldiers for candy getting run over while chasing a convoy of humvees. Worse, the insurgents could capitalize on the soldiers concern for the safety of the children during an ambush. This would either compromise the ability of the US soldiers to protect themselves, or force them to disregard the saftey of those kids while fighting back.

I'm sure most servicemembers are either ignorant of the order, or just choose to ignore it. But, I've heard three commanders bring it up and have seen several soldiers in the 101st get in trouble for it...

Let me get back on topic, though, and say that those photographs that show Iraqi's in their everyday environment are just great. Those aren't easy pics to get, as most of the time the locals are staring at the guys in body armor... Shows that those Iraqi's feel pretty comfortable around your brother and his unit. (that sounds funny, eh?)

    Thanks for the kind words.

I have no idea what kind of carmeras are used. He is a chaplan for his division. I think these pictures are a compilation from several of the soldiers in his unit. He helps put them together so they can send them home. I'm sure they select the best of what has been taken.

The pics may be taken by many but the words are all his. It's funny....even though he has been a minister for as long as I've known him (He was youth minister for a long time - middle and high school kids mainly)....he has always been goofy. Now I really sense that he has changed....become much more introspective and well.....mature. Of course he is the same age as me (51) so it's time. But this thing over there has had an obvious impact on him as I'm sure it does for every soldier. I just pray they get it done and come home soon. All of them.

    Shack,

I was watching last night while you were posting and did not want to interrupt. GREAT PHOTOS !

First, let your brother-in-law know that we think of those serving in combat.

Second, thank your brother-in-law for taking the time to share these photos with us. I really enjoy the contrast between close-up human to human photos and the long distance surroundings. I watch the usenet military photos frequently and have grown a bit numb to how they seem to be orchestrated.
