lsi9 speaker stand suggestions

was just wondering if anyone knew of some good speaker stands for a pair of lsi9s that would be pretty cheap. they would be on carpet and need to be around 30 inches. thanks.

You might consider making a pair out of mdf and fill them with sand or otherwise Parts Express might be a good starting place to look. These are mine and they seem to work just fine. They are crap london drugs ones I modified to hold sand... they weighed like 5 or 10 lbs before and now they are over 25 lbs a piece. (20" tall)

Yeah, you'll probably have to make/modify them. Thirty inch speaker stands don't usually come with a top plate large enough for the 9's. Are you sure you really want stands that tall?

I have the Target 28" HR70's, and they work great. Solid (welded, one-piece construction), sand-fillable, and with a nice large top plate. With the included spikes on the bottom they come to about 30" in height.

Sanus UF26 26" stands. It's the stands even Polk recommends. Kinda pricey though but I figure if it keeps my cat from knocking them over, it's worth the $$.

The Sanus look real nice in person. If you have a lot of "silver metal" type of products (tv, receiver, amp) then the Omnimount would look nice.

I bought the Cosmics mainly because they matched my computer system perfectly (aluminum pc case and silver lcd).

I got it for around 75$ on ebay and buy.com.

Dude, you have a nice pair of LSi9; spend a little and get some good solid stands!

At 33 lbs each, do you want them sitting 30 inches up on some flimsy MDF stand? If you look at the weight ratings for most of the cheaper stands, you will find that they will be exceeded by the weight of your LSi9. You want solid metal that can be mass loaded.
I would second the Target HR70 recommendation, also, maybe the StudioTech Ultra series. Atacama, Alpahson, and Atlantic make some nice ones too, but stay away from the low end models. Here is place that carries them all, and they have some of the lowest prices I've seen

Edit: Make sure you get some blu-tack. It will stick your LSi9 to the stands and keep things from shifting. Reviews have shown that blu-tack isolates the speaker as well as spikes do, but it doesn't leave indentions.

its not that i dont wanna spend a lot to get some kick **** stands, i just still in college and the budget is already a little stretched with the 9s...they are just so damn good though and i couldnt resist. but thats why i was looking for a good, not a couple hundred dollars, stand. and it looks like you guys know a few, which is awesome. so, thanks for all the links and suggestions, im gonna go through them all now.

p.s. right now they are sitting on top of some jbl s310 towers that i am using as speaker stands...but a friend is going to borrow those so hence the need for stands...

Maybe you can scour audiogon and ebay to save money, but I wouldn't get anything that weighs less than the speaker itself.(like Sanus NF series) You don't want those babies to be top heavy. One bump and they will topple over. Look for something that has hollow steel tube(s) that can be mass loaded with sand, shot, or kitty litter.

You should really get the most sturdy and solid stands that you can afford. the LSi9's are big and heavy as far as bookshelf speakers go. You don't want those things swaying around and possibly falling. TRy to find a pair that gives you a baseplate of at least 6" x 7". That gets kind of tough as you approach 30" in height. In general, stay away from the cheap ones made of MDF. Here are some pretty good choices too, aside from the Target Audio's I mentioned above:

hey whady, do u know if there is a difference between the df, rf, and uf models other than the base plate seems to be different shaped.

I think the # of support poles is the only real difference. The three-pole model might be more ideal for heavier speakers, as it will probably give you a little better lateral stability and resist swaying a bit better. I had the two-pole UF, which was fine (once filled with sand) with lighter speakers, but swayed a little bit with the LSi9's, even though I screwed the baseplate and topplate down pretty hard and secured them with some Lock-Tite. The triangular layout of the 3-pole version may help resist that better. Really though, the Target Audio HR70's have both the base and top plates welded to the columns, all of which are of a thicker guage of steel than the VTI's. With the columns sand-filled, the stands/speakers are now rock solid...like a pillar of granite, which is ideal.

one thing to watch for to prevent sway is the thickness of the base plate.

while they are cool in that you can experiment with height changes, they will not tip easily with the wide 4 point base and you can probably get them for around $100 or less, the base plate is not thick enough to prevent sway. if you don't mind projects, you can make stands with a thin plate like this more stable yourself, but, there's enough of a selection out there to avoid the problem from the start.

Depends on how high you sit. With my 28" stands, the LSi9's tweeters are pretty much at ear level (~35" off ground) when I sit on my couch. So measure the height of your ears when seated, subtract about 7.5", and you'll have your speaker stand height...give or take about 3/4" or so for spikes if needed.

Built from 3 1/2" round thick 14 gauge steel, top & base are wood. They are sand fillable. Mine weigh about 23lbs. Very little movement. $169.00 plus shipping
