Looking in some local pawn shops last weekend I saw 2 onkyo
M504 amps . Each in a different shop. one was 250.00 the other was I think 499.00 before asking if it could be had at a lower price. I didn't ask about the first one (499.00)
Any info. on these? Is there a problem happening to these lately
or do you think this is just a coinsidence?
One on Ebay went for 450.00 or so .

Dual mono, 165wpc with big beautiful meters and wood side panels, what's not to like? Looks like the bluebook is $375.00 mint, so buy the $250.00 one.

The meters do look cool don't they. they show500watts peak.
I think I need the power now that I have the rt3000s.
The little receiver I'm using heats up after a short period. I'll check them out again this coming week end . Maybe I could
pawn some tools or something to lower the costs even more;)

    I'm in wilmington N.C.
I'm going back to the 250.00 one in a minute. I think they're open till 6. The left side had scratchs on the wood but we'll see if a warranty comes with it.I heard the owner is a good man.
I also do a little woodworking so I'll look closer at the scratchs.
I have been holding on to an Onkyo pre amp (high end ) for 15yrs.
I think it has dual mono circutry too.A roommate gave it to me instead of rent money one month. (180.00) worth I think. I hope it still works.I think it retailed for 6 or 800 when new.
I won't make it to the other pawn shop tonight. I'll call them tomorrow.

:D I've snagged one. 250.00 +tax 48hr. guarantee. I'm going to hook it up behind my receiver now and see if I get any sound and meter movements. All lights and functions seem to work.Back with results in a little.Any idea what retail was on these when new?

I'm back ,The amp seems to work fine but i'm getting hiss with
the volume on the receiver turned all the way down.It is on both sets of speakers a&b. The meters work fine , The volume is fine,
theres the hiss in the background a little below normal talking level. A ground problem . I live in a older home . maybe the outlet isn't grounded.

I couldn't find a problem with the outlets so I went out and got the pre amp.(Onkyo P3060A) NO HISS,but the controls are static.:(
Also before I went to get the pre amp I was playing music
looking at other posible reasons and I tried pushing the receivers
speaker A button.BAD MOVE!!!!!!!! BLOWN tweeter in rt3000.
I thought the sound would just go off. When I pushed it in ,that's when a short or something happened. I beleive there is something wrong in that switch which was causing the hiss in the first place. I'm going to the parts page and see what a tweeter costs.I cant beleive my good luck but my bumbling is getting in the way a little.I just bought a pair of sda-crs's this past week-end and accidently crossed a makeshift interconnect cable.possibly the reason a woofer went scatchy. I still have some learning to do on that pair.
I still believe this Onkyo amp is in perfect cond.though and will be a keeper. With 2 of them what might my bumbling do then ?
I might want to take that chance with you, alls opinions on the amps credentials. You all have been where i'm starting to step.
    Thanks for your help!! Tony

    Tony,

sorry to hear about your misadventures.

Something to keep in mind next time you want to try out a iffy piece of gear.. get yourself some cheap o yard sale speakers.. and use those whenever trying out questionable gear. I know it's kinda late for that.. but for next time.

Hope your Onk amp works out for ya, and doesn't need repairs.

I bought a amp myself recently.. and i'm in the process of checking it out too.

As far as the scratchy sound you're getting from the volume knob. that would be from the pre amp.. not the Onkyo amp, most likely.

You won't believe it but I have 30 other pairs of speakers I could have tried this out on, but my woodworking shop/stereo cranking shop is FULL. A blessing and a curse. The scratching is in the pre-amp for sure. It is in the volume knob.

I will use a cheaper set next time.:)

    Thanks

Nice grab Tony. You might try spraying some Caig cleaner in that volume pot, should take care of the scratching.

Sounds like you got a good deal on the amp. Sorry to hear about the tweeter also. Unfortunately, Polk doesn't carry the trilaminate tweeter anymore. The replacement is a silk dome in the current RTi series. You can often find one on ebay at a reasonable cost.

Have fun with your new toy.

I just might get the other one from the other pawn shop if they still have it and they'll come down on the price with warrantee. Either way I'll let you know.
I'll work on getting that pot cleaned for shure.!!
I didn't see my tweeter # in parts(SL-6502) and also ,I pulled the cover off to make sure it didn't work and the tweeter magnet assem. unscrewed from the siver dome.
Is that the way to replace it ? does the silver dome stay attatched to the face plate for each replacement? doesn't sound
like any tweeter I've delt with in the past.I thought the dome should be attached permanently to the magnet structure.I,m tired :too much excitement for one night. :) Bye,

I have had and still use a lot of Onk power amps, including the M-504. The M-504 is a nice amp, but I damn sure wouldn't pay $500 for one. I wouldn't pay $400 for one.

I didn't pay near that much for the M-5090 that I currently have and use, and it is 200wpc and twice the size and weight of M-504. Early M-504's were 150 wpc, the later models being rated at 165wpc.

Never engage speaker On/Off switches with the power up man. Never.

I called Cus.ser. and the man helped me out with the prices .New tweeter on the way and a new driver too.
    Great company !!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to take the rt3000's amp. plates off and check them for any damage. The woofers sounded real good after my ordeal but I still want to look. Also I want to check all my drivers in both sets.

It was hard to get to sleep while I was kicking myself you know where.

I was tired , sorry about the mis- spelling of your initials BDT.
I still need to check my speakers out but I listened to them again tonight and I am all :D:D:D about my new amp. and system. It seems to only take 1 or 2 watts to play pretty loud. GEORGE, I looked up this M504 in one of my old stereo reviews and your right. this is nice but there are alot NICER ones to be had and to keep a look out for in the future . ;) The other guys were right too.this amp. sold for 800.00 new in 1988 . (17yrs. old). But wow
does it power these speakers effortlessly. At 250.00 I guess anybody would like to have 1 or 2 . The spec.s said 480watts into 2 ohms. pretty impressive I think.I hope for its age that it has some years left to go.
I never got around to calling on the other amp. but my wife and I will most likely stop in there tomorrow morning and start the wheeling and dealing process. They know I want a 15'' cerwin -vega sub ,125.00 might be their lowest price, period.I wanted A packege deal along with the sda-crs pair last week-end but they come down enough. Now I want to bargain for the other amp.since I know how it performs now:D :D:D Pretty too!!!
F1nut I still need to spray pot cleaner But its alot better tonight.

Well I only scored ONE. The GIRL who had pawned it off came back this morning 3 hr. before I went there and bought it back.
I asked what they got for it ,,,350.00 that was the lowest they were going to go anyway. I was going to ask George if that seemed to be o.k. before purchasing the second one.
I did get them to come down on the Cerwin-Veg LW-15 15'' powered sub for 100.00:D but I had asked about an Onkyo TX 8511 receiver they had there playing it. It was to be a combo deal. the receiver was 220.00 they reduced it to 100.00 also as long as both were bought. SO no 2nd M504 but the above came home with me. The heartbeat on that one PINK FLOYD song was playing and that sold me on the sub.I like Pink Floyd on my Monitor 10s . all 4 at once is nice :D I don't know if you guys have kept up with my experiences but I have learned and will listen to your advice for sure! I'm learning about you all from looking at other posts thet you all have replied to. There's alot of knowlede abought ALL electronics here, not just POLK speakers.George ,your amp. experiences are IMPRESSIVE!!!
I still haven't checked my other speakers for damage but they probibly are fine. Talk to you all later:)
