I've got a Marantz DV-3100, which is between 4 & 5 years old. The manual does not say it will play DVD-R discs. This weekend, I popped in a DVD-R disc, and sure enough, it played it, no problem. I can't explain this. Anyone else ever encountered this?

I didn't even think DVD-R discs were around 4 to 5 years ago. I don't know how this thing is playing DVD-R discs, but it is, so I guess that is all that matters.

I could be wrong, but won't most DVD players play DVD-R? I think some of the older ones have trouble with the "+R" media, but the -R is supposed to have good backwards compatibility. Much the same way that the vast majority of older CD players don't have trouble reading CD-Rs even though they weren't designed specifically for it.

This was my understanding as well - some unlucky players have trouble reading the recordable DVDs, but for the msot part they just work, whether they were designed to or not.

    So lucky you! :)
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'll go along with all that. The thing works, good enough for me.

I haven't tried a DVD+R disc yet, maybe some day I'll try that.

I've found that it even comes down to the brand of DVD+/-R... I have some cheap bulk Office Depot ones that work and some nice memorex ones that don't. Go figure.

My 3+yr old JVC XV-SA600 specifies it will not play +R's or any RW's , but does so with ease and has great PQ with those to boot .
So far the JVC has played ever disk Ive thrown at it (using mostly Fuji and Maxell's -R/+R/+RW's ) . The JVC keeps up with my brand new Sony unit in every aspect . Go fiqure ... but Iam not complaining :p
