They don't appear to be the monitor 12's, as they don't have enough active drivers. They look like earlier speakers as well, since they have the exposed crossovers. Perhaps a monitor 10? But the seller also states a 12" PR, which would not be the monitor 10's.

RT55 would be out of the question, as they're more modern speakers.

It also has a 5x4" tweeter... wow! And... natural base

Active drivers? What are you talking about?

It's definetly a RTA 12....w/ original Peerless tweeters and the uncommon guide pins, instead of treelocks, on top for the grill. The glare on the tweeter face almost makes you think SL1000, but after looking at these a couple times....I think they are Peerless.

The "L" may simply be confusion on the label....identifying it as a "Left".

The more commonly known Monitor 12 had 4 6.5's, I think that's what Noah is referring to.

Sorry, I didn't realise that the monitor 12 was offered with only 2 active drivers. The picture on the Polk website shows 4, plus the PR. Must be an early one, then?

The RTA 12's serial numbers did begin with Left and Right abbreviations...

    noah,
Confusion abounds that's owed to their naming, but the RTA 12 and Monitor 12 are two different animals.

The RTA 12's full name is the "Real-Time Array Reference Monitor System". In its day it was the TOTL in the Monitor series which included the Mini-Monitor, 5, 7, 10, RTA 12 and LF 14 sub. The 12 is the only one to have the RTA designation. It was referred to both as the RTA 12 and the Monitor 12 in Polk brochures.

In the Club we mostly refer to it as the RTA 12 for clarity, but anyone who's listing a pair is just as likely to call them a Monitor 12. What we here call the Monitor 12 came later. I believe the RTA 12 may have been gone by then (but not sure of this... Russ? doro?) and Polk just recycled the name.

Just for good measure they later brought out an RTA line, which did not align the tweeter with the MW's as was done with the 12. It's the reason doro and many of us consider the RTA 12 to be the only true RTA design. The latter RTA's were also tagged with a "tl" at the end.

As much as we love their speakers, naming them was never one of Polk's strong suits.

    Clear as mud???

EDIT: And somewhere along the line the RTA 12 grew an integral base. Another current thread is discussing that...
    More later,

Okay, I've got things straightened out now. I knew there was another vintage line and I couldn't remember the RTA part. And there was good reason I knew there was another one... because there's thread on them right now in Vintage Speakers (I think).

Sorry, my memory's not what it.... well, it never was :P

they look exactly like the ones i have (except for the ridiculous sheen!!) did not know the guide pins were rare (mine have them as well) i assume they are for tweeter covers (i never got top covers when i got mine, wish i had them though)

oh, and my cabinets are a little more beat up (again, the way i got them, not from my mistreatment)
