If you want it and and can afford it,get it.It's a good reciever. If the price is bothering you check out the 630 at closeout prices.Think it's just about the same, and if the 635 has newer software you can have the 630 updated.Harmon Audio is auctioning units every day on Ebay and have an internet store selling their refurbs with the same warranty as the new ones.I recently got a 430 and really like it.

I think you can get much better for $1k.

I had some HK stuff once.... ONCE.

Actually I still have my AVR-510. It's sitting on my floor right now, about to go back to Circuit City for service... for the third time.

just picked up my old 430 from the repair shop today... yup, thank god I've got it sold. BTW, the 635 isn't shipped yet. There's a guy on ebay that's selling it for like $850 shipped but he doesn't have 'em. Hope you don't mind waiting. Or you could just get the Denon 3805 and have 3 times the sound quality.

For a thousand bucks, I'd get an entry level receiver with pre-outs and a used 5-channel amp. That setup will probably sound better than any $1,000 receiver.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

The HK avr 635 can be had for $769.99 at J&R, and onecall, it can also be had for 799.99 at Vanns.com all of these are authorized retailers. The receiver has received positve reviews on other forums, but it has some of the same problems that plague Harman's previous receivers such as the sound defaulting to Dolby Digtal when ever that signal is present, but Harman has announced a software fix for this being in the works.

The firmware should be downloadable from the web and you would need a serial port on your pc to hook the receiver up, and apply the firmware.

but you'll void the warranty unless you have an authorized repair shop upgrade it for you.

No you won't void your warranty the download will be offered from Harmans own web site with instructions on how to install it on to the AVR. You can have a authorized service center do the install if you like but it does not void your warranty if you do it yourself. They already had a firmware update for the avr 630 and 430 to fix the audio dropouts, and add Prologic IIx

the paperwork I had on my 430 said it was only valid if upgraded via an authorized service center...

Audio dropout?Do you mean the time the audio lags when making a change of settings or inputs, etc.?I have noticed the AVR switching to Dolby Digital without any prompting.

The HK AVR430 is what I have now.Hope to get better service out of it than some of you guys have.Haven't had it long enough to complain or brag on it other than to say that I like the sound.Very clean power that exceeds my family's needs for movies and music.

The negative numbers indicate how much headroom is left.

just curious how you quantify sound quality??

I have Denon also and do prefer the sound to that of H/K, but doub't I can justify a baseless comment like it having 3 times the sound quality...

sorry, that comment just rubbed me the wrong way...

Don't think that comment was meant to be taken literally. IMO, though, the HK is hard to beat SQ-wise. Not even the Denon 3805 can touch it.
