Throw out your subwoofers!
Thought that would catch some attention!
In all seriousness...I've been reading about Infinite Baffle subwoofers for a long time now but am waiting to get a house of my own before installing one. I had the chance to listen to one last night at a "cult" member's house and let me tell you...I will never use a boxed subwoofer again. It was seriously a life-changing experience; a true revelation! He was using four of the Lambda Acoustic IB15s ($100 each if bought in 4s) with a Crown XLS402 amplifier and a Behringer Feedback Destroyer Pro. Total cost: UNDER A GRAND!
It's extremely difficult to sum up the experience and how good the bass sounded. It was the tightest, cleanest, most powerful bass I've ever listened to. I auditioned an SVS B4+ with a Crown K2 amplfier over the Christmas holiday and this infinite baffle, costing 1/4 what the SVS cost, totally annihilated it.
Now, I'm not trying to put anyone down for loving their boxed subs; hell, I own 3 boxed subs myself. But after hearing this IB setup, they're all going to be sold. I highly recommend anyone that wants better bass and has the means to install an IB subwoofer to do so. There is a list of people on the site that allow for in-home auditions. WELL WORTH YOUR TIME. If no one on the list is near you, by all means post a message asking to see one in your area and I'm sure someone will pop up within a 2 hour drive. Also, give yourself a good hour or two and read through the FAQ at the top, the installs page, and a few pages of threads. Trust me on this.
Remember, us Club Polkies try to look out for one another, and after my experience last night, I'm trying to hold true to that promise! Do yourselves a favor...if you have the means to install one, don't look back!

did you hear this IB in Columbus?
I can't view the cult of IB any more at work. it's blocked for web chat :rolleyes:Sony KDL-40V2500 HDTV, Rotel RSX-1067 Receiver, Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray, Slim Devices Squeezebox, Polk RTi6, CSi3 & R15, DIY sub with Atlas 15 -
I understand the idea. So what in the sound quality turns you on. What are the differences between these and box subs? What are the downfalls? Talk to us.
madmaxVinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
an IB is a GIANT sealed sub. You get the "tight" sound associated with a sealed box but thanks to room gain and multiple drivers you also get the extension of a ported sub. You also use more drivers, which keeps distortion REALLY low. You're supposed to be able to hear details in the bass that a normal sub wouldn't reproduce as cleanly. They're supposed to be excellent for music.
I haven't heard one, but I'd love to.Sony KDL-40V2500 HDTV, Rotel RSX-1067 Receiver, Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray, Slim Devices Squeezebox, Polk RTi6, CSi3 & R15, DIY sub with Atlas 15 -

Downfalls? cutting a hole in your wall/ceiling/floor. that's about it... except you'll probably have to use EQ to tame the IB. where a box sub will give you more placement flexibility.
differences between box subs and an IB. You don't have to have a box sub sitting on the floor. You use an adjoining room/space as the "box".Sony KDL-40V2500 HDTV, Rotel RSX-1067 Receiver, Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray, Slim Devices Squeezebox, Polk RTi6, CSi3 & R15, DIY sub with Atlas 15 -
Zero,
I currently have a dual Adire Shiva sealed in a 3 ft3 box. Sounds really really nice. I also have a DCM 10" 100 watter I got at Circuit City a few years ago when I worked there for about $85 with my discount; retailed for $199. I also have a Velodyne CT-120 that's on loan to my brother and I just sold my SVS 25-31 CS+ to a fellow Polkie about 6 months ago. The line array cabinets are finished and I'm just waiting now for the weather to heat up so I can paint the baffles, tops, and backs of the cabinets. Any normal winter we usually see a few 60+ days but this winter hasn't been very nice to us speaker builders. I get mad every time I look at them and can't wait until they're finished. I'll be making a website when they're done with construction pics, crossover building and measurements.
tryrrthg,
Long time no see! I've tried to contact that guy in Columbus twice in the last few months and I've never received an e-mail response from him. My buddy that lives in Toledo knows a guy with an IB so we got ahold of him and went over to see how I would like it. BOY DID I! I went up there to visit him for the day and wish I could have stayed another just to hear it again. Withdrawls are bad, bad things -
madmax,
Seriously, take an hour when you get time and read through the FAQ and read a few pages of threads and you'll learn everything you'll need to know.
Considering he was using 15 in drivers you would think the sound wouldn't be extremely tight and accurate. NOT TRUE. It was incomprehensibly good; a whole new level of bass. Like I said above, I heard a well EQ'd SVS B4+ with a Crown K2 amplifier and this IB spanked the SVS. If that doesn't say something, I don't know what does. -

NOT AT ALL! As I said, "you". I was placing the reader's perceived thoughts into my message.
The hottest woofer now for the IB, aside from the killer $100 deal on the IB15s, are the new Avalanche 18" woofers. Absolutely wonderful for music reproduction from what I've read.
I would have went with larger woofers in my sealed sub but I picked up the Shivas for $35 each used from ThomasW, the guy that runs the Cult site. If you see his 12 Shivas Dancing IB, those are the subs I bought off him recently. He upgraded to the newer Adire DPL12. -
