I just got my PSW202 back from warrenty. Same prob as everyone else. (IC and caps). I thought I would see how someone else would setup and tweak. I have the 6005 speaker package and a Yamaha 5550 titanium amp.

    Welcome...

    You'll want to calibrate your system... Radio Shack SPL meter plus calibration DVD.

    There are several cal DVD's to choose from. The AVIA is the most expensive, but most trouble free. Other choices have one or more glitches you need to be aware of.

    Here's a couple good thread links...

    I am also interested in understanding the best way to calibrate my system; I read the threads and still have a couple of questions:

    1.-What's the benefit of using a calibration DVD? What's wrong with the system's test tones?

    2.-I read lots of things on special care with the sub calibration; assuming I use the system's test tones, and go for 75db for all speakers with 00 master volume....should I use the same 75db for the sub?

    Thanks!!

    Ah the dreaded double post... I'll only answer once.. ;)

    1. Nothing wrong with built in test tones. Using a DVD includes all the components in the playback chain, i.e., player, processor, etc. The DVD's offer video cal as well as audio.

    2. Sub cal should be "to taste". For HT many like to calibrate "hot" (within reason) when it comes to the sub, on the order of 3 to 5 dB higher than the rest of the system. Of course, this depends upon:
    - your listening habits (how close to reference levels you watch DVD's);
    - the capabilities of your sub (can't push an entry level as hard);
    - your room size and its isolation (a 12x12' spare bedroom with 8' ceilings and no openings vs. a 20x25' den with a cathedral ceiling and openings to entry, dining, etc.).

    The bigger the room, to get the jollies of "pressurization", the hotter you may want to calibrate... again, within reason, and within the capabilities of your sub. Room size is the major factor in selecting the proper sub(s).

    For music with the sub in play, balanced is a better way to go, IMO, but again this is subject to taste. Most AVR's / Pre-Pro's will allow separate sub calibration for each different source.

    If you can, go here to see my room.

    I know I would need a better sub; maybe you can recommend something...

    Thanks!!!

    Glanced at the other thread...

    IMO, best first move would be to wall in your HT area...

    We should probably move any further discussion over there in fairness to the others participating over there, and xfmr, who may want his thread back...

    Doesn't bother me a bit. If we can all learn and share on the same topic, sounds good to me. Going to go get a meter this weekend. Didn't use one the first time but I figure I might as well do it right this time. I know my system won't blow the walls out or anything but yah gotta start somewhere
