Age old question Which Sub?

Hey guys....havent been around in quite some time but I see alot of the same posters are still here. I am back to solicit some opinions on which sub to buy for my HT. I have moved to a new house + my old DIY sub finally gave out after 12 years of faithful service. I know alot of the forum recommends SVS...Im not afraid of DIY or prebuilt. My room size is as follows:

Room is shaped like a reverse L
Front Wall 13'6" containing TV, mains, etc
Right Wall 22'6"
Left Wall approx 10' then left 6' then back with 5'9" opening then 6'3" to rear wall
Rear Wall 19'6"

HT is set up as if in a 13'6" x 22'6" rectangle.

This is standard sheetrock over 2bys, concrete slab with carpet and pad, 8' ceilings. Mostly used for home theater but musical ability needs to be there.

Current speakers RT20Ps mains, CS350LS F+R Centers, RT16s surrounds, LS/FXs Front fx.

I would like to incorporate the subs in the RT20s to serve as mid bass or handle the upper sub bass frequencies and have the new seperate sub handle 80-60 HTZ and below.

I want to say budget isnt an issue, but Im not into spending more than I have to, even though I could afford so called audiophile subs I still live with the best bang for your buck attitude. Box or cylinder isnt an issue either way although I prefer the look of a nice box.

I do have a seemingly fair deal set up for a velodyne DLS-5000r...a digitally controlled 15" with integrated 600RMS/1000Peak amp for 675.00.

Any comments/suggestions greatly appreciated.
Take Care,
Brett

Tell us more about your amp for the DIY sub (assuming it still works) and can you cut a hole in the wall at the front, or in the ceiling or floor near the front?

If so you could build an IB sub like so:

    Gatemplin,

The Sub amp is a seperate DBX with 150RMS/300Peak....however I probably was going to move that to another room with a smaller 10" non powered sub I already have. I was assuming it wouldnt be enough to power push whatever I may buy.

As far as cutting the wall, thats a no go...possibly the ceiling although placement would probably be an issue...I would probably rather stay with a stand alone unit, unless someone could sell me on IB being that much better.

That sure looks like an interesting setup.

I haven't heard them myself, but here is a site that has more info:

    http://f20.parsimony.net/forum36475/

Check out the sub gallery for ceiling installs.

I also haven't heard the Velo.

There are of course the subs from SVS or HSU but I dont know if they are a better value than the Velo.

    www.svsubwoofers.com
    www.hsuresearch.com

There are many good DIY options for stand alone subs if you have the space. How much room do you have?

As far as space I have quite a few options...Traditionally my sub has always been on one of the front wall corners...I have about 18" from the side wall to my main speaker...other than that height and length really arent a problem.

That being said I dont want something so big it looks akward...The box I had for my old 15 was 18x20x22 and I didnt think that was too big by any means. Actually if I could reuse that in would be nice, but not necessary.

Plus there are plenty of other areas in the room that it could be placed depending on performance.

Ive been to the svs website many times....there are quite a few I could drool over there just looking over all options. Interesting site with the IB...gives me a little more to think about.

Well after reading more I think IB is not the way for me. I see alot of views of this post but only Gatemplin has given any input. Would really love to hear from some other enthusiasts.

Which reminds me Thanks for your input Gate:p

No problem. There really aren't many DIYers here so dont be discouraged by the lack of responses. Most people are probably reading this to learn.

The 18" width limits your choices. You could do something with a high displacement 12" or 15" Avalanche sub driver from www.ascendantaudio.com and pair it with a ADA amp from www.adireaudio.com . Just follow the recommended volume.

An amazing sub would be the Avalanche 18" in a 2" cube with an Adire ADA600.

There is a DIY subwoofer forum at www.diyaudio.com where you can see some other projects, as well as the DIY section at www.hometheaterforum.com

There are so many options with that kind of money.
