Gabo, you're correct, the question is simple, but the reason is that your DVD31 IS "an actual cd player". CDs require a laser with an operating wavelength of about 780nm for optimum reading; DVDs(and DVD-As/SACDs)require a 650nm laser. Your DVD31(and other CD/DVD players)has a dual laser which can operate at either 780 or 650nm and reads both types of discs optimally. A separate CD player has no advantage here.
The digital output of the player can output the CD data and it isn't necessary to use the analog outputs for this. -
Analog cables will be needed if you are going to be listening to DVD-a/SACD's. I don't know if your player is compatible with either of these Hi-Rez formats so it may not matter. The other thing to consider is which has better DAC's, the player or the receiver. If you are intent on using the player to do all of the decoding then you'll need analog cables to get the decoded signal from the player to the receiver/preamp. If you plan on using the receiver/preamp to decode the source material then a digital coax or Toslink cable will be all that's needed.
