what drives to use for making backup dvds?

I was thinking about getting myself a dvd burner so that I could make backup copies of my dvds and stuff like that. Then I realized... the other drive I have is a cd burner and won't be able to read or write dvds. Using dvd decrypter and dvd shrink (I also have nero express if that can be used) is it possible to make a backup copy using only the one drive? Does dvd shrink copy the files into a temporary folder to be copied?

Thanks,

Michael

Yes. All you need is a DVD burner... one drive. It will rip your DVD on your harddrive in a folder you create. Look into Plextor if you are shopping for a new burner.

I second the Plextor drive. I have a Plextor 716UF connected to my machine at work. It's a portable USB unit. Great drive, but will run you over $200.00. Does Dual Layer burning and pretty much every format (DVD+, DVD-, CD-R, etc...)

The Plextor is a great drive. I also bought an external, USB hard drive (less than $150 for a huge one) to lay all the data on. Windows and my internal HD still have to broker the deal, but I don't end up with all the fragmentation on the internal HD after the party is over.

Plextor _does_ make nice drives, and I've never had a problem with them.... except for how much they cost!

Lite On DUAL LAYER... writes just about any media on the planet-

Near as I can tell, this is the cheapest Plextor DVD burner that newegg has to offer-

It's only single-layer... There was one DVD burner cheaper, but it was SATA, and not everyone has that yet...

sorry, but I stick with my Lite-on stuff. Hasn't let me down yet.

Again, Plextor makes great drives..... if you can afford them. I personally like my own brand :)

Funny no one has mentioned the Pioneer drives yet. Last I check, they were the number 1 rated drives.

I have the A80 and love it...plus they look really nice also...

    Nadams is correct.

Lite-On does make very good drives for a bit less than the Plextors. I've heard good things about their DVD Burners. I should have mentioned that I have a Lite-On CD burner at home and it's been a solid champ for 2 years with heavy usage over that period of time.

The Pioneers get great reviews too.

Stay away from the freaky off-brand names. CRAP!

If you want to save some $$$, check out the Pioneers or Lite-On. Plextor is rock solid too, but for a little more $$$.

I've got a NEC 3500A and it works great. They've got a new model out, the 3520. There is a lot of mod'd firmware out there for better/faster burning.

    just my $0.02

NEC, Pioneer, Plextor. Lite-on is on decline. Another I would look at is Toshiba. I had older Pioneer before and it always worked like a charm. Now I have used 3 Toshiba's, no problems at all. I have one NEC on its way and it's said to be the brand right now to buy.

A lot depends on your playback device. If it is a standalone DVD player then you might experience some problems. If you play it back with a HTPC everything should be very smooth.

I have a LiteOn cd-rom and dvd-rom and they are great drives. They work great, my cd-rom is a little noisy but for the price they are by far the best drives I have come along. Even computer I have made for family and friends in the last 2 years has had LiteOns. My DVD-R is a Pioneer 105/A05 great drive too, I recearched them and at the time 1.5 years ago they were the most compatible drives on the market. It's not a problem now. I was looking at a Plextor now. Especially since they are haveing a 30 mail-in-rebate for the next 2 weeks they seem "more" worth it. If you're in a financial bind I would always trust LiteOn.

Thanks for the tons of info people. I am thinking I will pick up a LiteOn SOHW-1633S for $87.55 cdn locally sometime over the weekend. I have checked out future shop and other big box stores but it seems the little computer place I bought my computer from has much better deals on drives. This is the store that I will probably get it from.

Also future shop has a deal on dvds... link ... has anyone dealt with mitsumi before? They also have 200 packs of benq's for $60...

Well I'm off to work, thanks,

    Michael
