Receivers

I have a Panasonic Home Theater in a Box (SA-HT400) but recently upgraded my speakers to a pair of RTi6, a CSi5 and a PSW404. I still use the Receiver and rear speakers that came with the SA-HT400.
I'm happy with the current setup but I'm also thinking about upgrading my receiver to a mid priced Onkyo (TX-SR502) or a similar receiver. If I upgraded my receiver, would I hear a significant improvement in sound quality? I usually just watch TV, play MP3s from a PC, and play Xbox games. I rarely watch DVD movies.

Most would say that the Onk would be a step up from your Pannie, but whether that translates to anything meaningful for you depends upon how you listen... material, levels, etc.
Bringing the 404 into the picture has already lightened the AVR's load for HT.
If you are determined to make a move, you might best be served purchasing locally from a retailer that will accept returns. Then you can check out the benefits for yourself.More later,

I did the same thing as you want to do (you can read my rather comical story in the Clubhouse if you want). Samsung HTiB to my current setup.
Just from my experiance a Harman Kardon AVR 235 is phenomianal sound wise, but then apparently all HK's are. I got mine new online at OneCall.com for around $350, $375 after s/h. They are an HK authorized dealer, so you get all those manufacturer benefits that are usually voided if you buy from unathorized. However, I'd only buy online if you are damn sure you want it. Return/exchange massive pain and often expensive (OneCall charges %15 restocking).
Really try at a local store. I know for a fact that Circuit CIty basically has a try at home policy (you have something like a month after purchase to return, opened or not)."Nothing in this world is accomplished without passion."

i agree with the whole harmon kardon 235 thing. regular price is $500. i bought mine for $350 INCLUDING s&h AND Tax from j&r.com which btw is a polk authorized dealer. beware the avr 135 however- no plIIx and no upgrade path.
I was shopping around for 6months for a receiver upgrade from my crappy sony es and i gotta tell ya this is not only the best value for the dollar, but it also outperformed ANY receiver i tried.
compared to the h/k - onkyo and yamaha are terrible... the only ones that came close were denon and marantz, but again- i liked the sound of Harman Kardon much better. good luck!
in 2 months i'm getting an Outlaw 7100 7ch. receiver and using the 235 as a pre-amp. good times....
