After modding my Audiosource SW15, I wasn't very happy with it. It's still boomy, and not tight at all. I'm looking for something in the $300 to $400 range. I am thinking about the $400 10 sub from SVS, or the HSU VTF-2. But, I like the idea of putting together the sub myself, and was wondering if the Dayton sub kits sound as good as they look. The 10 in model is only $350(not sure about shipping), and should be more than enough for my living room...

From what I've read of those who own them, the 10" version is better for music and smaller rooms, wheeas the 12" is better for medium to larger rooms. The STF-2 is a good sub, but either of the Daytons will probably be a little tighter-sounding for music.

The Dayton subs are supposed to very good.

You might also want to consider the Adire Audio Rava. in that price range.

Forget about it. Just buy a Hsu or SVS and you don't have to wonder how a cheap DIY sub will sound. You already know that a Hsu or SVS will sound great.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

That's a bad response.....The Dayton Titanic is anything but a "cheap DIY sub"! I should know...I have one and for a 2 channel rig it is excellent and does good job for a moderate room size HT rig. Can't speak for the SVS but it is as good or better than the HSU VTF-2.

Dang shack, I thought you thought that actually making something and using it had as much relevance to these conversations as staying in a "Holiday Inn" :p:D

Daytons are great little subs but the only things I have heard to compare to is the PSW10 (Dayton blows it away) and the PB12+2 (Which devoured the Dayton). Until you want to spend the $429 + shipping for the SVS PB-10, I would get the Dayton unless you find a really good deal on some HSU closeouts somewhere.

Didn't mean to piss on your sub, shack.

Here's a brand new Hsu STF-2 that's less expensive than the Dayton sub:

Keep in mind that a Hsu or SVS sub will likely have a higher resell value than a comparable DIYer.

I don't care what you think of "my" sub. I think you were giving bad advice based on his questions...plus, I doubt if you've ever heard the Titanic to make that kind of reply. It is a very good little sub and there are folks better qualified than me that think so. Wes Phillips' Titanic Review. And if the HSU STF-2 is the one that was sold at CompUSA for $349-$299 (and I"m pretty sure it is) then it is a decent sub...but again the Titanic is as good and probably better IMO.

The Titanic is a sealed design and will be easier to integrate without the "boom" of many ported subs. It can be done with a ported sub...it's just easier with a sealed design. If you don't want to build one I would suggest the Adire Rava...another sealed design, for around $400.

Sounds like he would like a DIY and the answer to the second part is YES!

And you thought that why.....? Besides....I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express TWO nights so I'm obviously twice as smart.
