I currently have a Kenwood VR-705, would a Pioneer VSX-D914-K be worth the upgrade? I can't afford the elite models =(

how much money do you have to spend? I'm sure you can do better...
-
$400

yeah, take a look at some good receivers online:
Denon 3801
Denon 3802
Denon 2803
Harman Kardon AVR 510
Harman Kardon AVR 520
Harman Kardon AVR 525
Onkyo 602
There are bunches of other options also in that price range. I think you can do better than the Pioneer in that price range... -
What speakers do you have?
If you don't mind going refurbished, try the Denon 1905($300) or 2105($386) on ubid.
Both are nice receivers in that price range.Tschüss

One of the reasons I liked about the pioneer is that it has preamp outputs so I can later upgrade it with an AMP in the future.

I have a used STR-DA555ES reciever that I will sell to you for $200 shipped. I understand this unit cost $1000 new. It is rated at 120 watts at 8 ohms for all 5 surround channels. It is 35 pounds. I don't have the original manual, but have a copy. I can email you photos if you want.

Any of the Denon or HKs listed above will have preamps and will sound better than the Pioneer.Yamaha RX-V661
RTi6
CSi5
FXi3

The 1905 and 2105 have preamp outputs for all channels. I'm using a friend's 1905 right now and it has a lot of good features and the sound quality is pretty good too. The 1905 retails for $500 on Crutchfield and the 2105 retails for $650, so don't let the refurbished price fool you. Either one would do very good for your Monitors. And with the preamp outputs, you would be able to upgrade amp sections later.
Hope this helps.

Can you send me some photographs of your Sony?
Thank you! -
baboon, I'd jump all over that Sony at that price. Their ES stuff is very nice...
-
I saw some Sony DBs on ebay for cheap, are they sorry?
-
yeah, those suck compared to the ES line. If you're going to go Sony, go ES...
It's their high end product... -
