Yeah! I need help...
Ok, we had a water valve break behind the washer, I have contained it by pipes to run into bowls, but dangit - I gotta go to sleep...
SO, I went outside and looked at the meter and the cut off switch...
For the life of me, i cant figure out how to shut off that effing thing...
It has a lil knof with an arrow... this arrowing is pointing to a big 'washer' with hand grips, if I turn it to the right - water starts to run out of it... is this normal? If I keep turning it to the right... will it shut off? DANGIT - I need help! PLEASE HELP!

Trey,
Find the water main IN THE HOUSE and shut it off there. -
Where in gods name would that be????- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
-
Check the Mech room where your furnace and water heater are. Do you have a water meter in the house?
-
The main cut off switch for the house is out beside the road...
the hot water heater is under the house...
The main cut off switch is beyond me, I have no idea how to cut it off...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Get your **** under the house and look for a single water line coming in through the foundation wall or up through the dirt. Follow it both directions and you should find a shut-off valve.
-
There should be a square 'plug' on the street side of the meter, get the vice grips and shut it off. A quarter turn either way should do it.
You'll know its off when the meter stops moving.Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service. -
What do I turn???
THIS IS IT...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Turn the knob with the arrow 90 deg. and your water should be turned off.
-

Bed?!? Aren't you gonna fix the leak?
-
Resolved?!? What the F*** do you mean "Resolved"? The damn waters not leakin cause it's turned off, that ain't resolved! Somebody better get sorry **** outta bed...the job ain't done till the waters back on....and not leakin'!!
Trey, you lazy little ****...get yer **** up and get the tools out! How the hell do you plan to amount to anything if you climb in bed when there's work to be done? -
Carpentry and woodwork the kid has been impressive with.
Plumbing 101 he recieved a good lesson tonight. I'm assuming he is going to sleep to get to school tomorrow.
What about the water heater? Depending if it totally drained it could be a problem too. I would want to shut it down until water pressure is restored. -
Good point on the water heater.
FWIW, there are suppose to be a shut off valves for the hot and cold water lines just before the hose connections to the washer.Political Correctness'.........defined

That is what was leaking!
Unfortunately, we dont know of place to go at 1am to find a replacement valve...
And.. I had to go to bed, school.. yeah
I can replace heating elements, and faucets, and thermostats...
BUT this is a bit beyond my field of expertise eh - I couldnt rightfully assure you that if I fixed the valve or installed a new one, that as soon as we turn on the water... there wont be a WORSE leak... ha! lol- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Just curious why this is a 16 year olds responsibility.....
Where's your dad, etc? -
Trey,
A water value has a nut looking thing under the knob is what leaking? If so easy fix just try to tighten some a slight turn will do, it will be easier then replacing value.

i got it frank, and i LMAO!!
My pnly question is where's Mom and dad?? -
My Mom dosnt know anything about this, I am looked at to fix things around the house, and my sister dosnt do anything except make life harder around here...
My Dad moved out in 1995, he lives 30-40 minutes away, and I havnt really held a conversation with him for about 6-7 months now...
I tried tightening the valve, which it did tighten alot, but the leak did not stop, it actually got worse..
And since I had no luck with local people helping us, I finally thought to post on here about 2 hours later...
by that time, I had compiled a contraption - I ran a pipe to the valve, for the water to run down into a bowl...
This was alot better than it running down into a wall..
Fun fun fun...god I was tired today!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Glad Frank and the Gang were there for you!
If you replace the hose bib (valve) for the washer yourself, be mindful of what it may be screwed into. If it's a copper or plastic piping system, put a holdback on the copper or plastic fitting that the hose bib screws into. A hold back is a wrench going the opposite way of the direction you are turning the valve (counter clockwise to loosen..... remember "righty tighty and lefty loosey.") If you don't hold back the torque exerted on the valve you're removing, you'll end up with worse problems to fix. Reverse the hold back when you tighten the new valve as well. Same principal applies.
Good luck! You're well on your way to a master's license. As soon as you learn that crap doesn't run uphill and Friday is payday, you're there! -
There is packing/ washers under the valve stem's nut that can be replaced...
Still have to be careful of torquing the valve as BMDP indicated...More later,
Tour...

Oh, I wasn't sure where you were at.....Didn't mean to tread on a crappy situation. I've been through it myself.
Either way dude...you should definitely get someone who is liscenced to deal with this stuff because you can end up creating huge problems if you mess up. Good on shutting off the water though...I just kind of wondered why YOU were the only one dealing with this. -
We are trying to get a plumber out here, but alas... they didnt make it today - what a surprise...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I've had some requests to see what I did to take the leak and put it in a bowl... ha
so here it is...
had to empty that bowl about 4 times in 1 hour...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
haha....I'm certainly glad you didn't end up having to empty that bowl 20 times.....lolGeorge Grand wrote: »

1) The valves are easy to replace. Get down to the hardware store and buy 2 BOILER DRAINS or 2 MIP x hose valves, 1 small roll of teflon tape and swap 'em out yourself. The valves you have now are threaded, piece of cake, just use a back-up wrench so you don't twist the pipe. You already know how to turn the water main off so your ready for action Jackson!
2) While you're at the hardware store, pick up some Stainless Steel braided hoses for the washer. Imagine the mess you'll have when those rubber hoses rupture (and they will). Now imagine the mess if it happens when no one is home. One of my customers had this happen to hers. Washer was on the upper level and she ended up with a foot of water on the main floor. -
Very good advice there about the rubber hoses...
I *really* prefer a pro to change the valves, as I dont trust myself with it, I just dont have the knowledge to give it a try...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
