Built in Bias meter, EL34 push-pull greatness. This one belongs in a museum.

One word...Wood! That is a beautiful piece of gear!

I would love to get a stereo tube amp, but with all the choices out there, I don't know where to start. Any advice from Russ and the rest of you tube gurus? Has anyone built one from a kit, rather than buy one? Any advantages?

    Thanks!

Found a couple references saying "Power: 30"... Based on similarities with the Dynaco ST-70, 30 wpc looks about right...

Found nothing on the test input question...

I have no idea on the 'Test' inputs, I'll ask my tech though.

Output is 25-27wpc. You can run EL34's at higher voltages and get more power - but a lot of GOOD amps don't like to run tubes on the ragged edge of their capabilties. By backing it down a little bit, tube life and overall reliabilty is substantially increased.

    Cheers,
    Russ

The Test inputs are the ones to use on the 8B. Sid Smith, who did most of the design work on the 8B insisted that rumble filters be used to counteract the noisy turntables of the day. Marantz disagreed, so they compromised by adding the test input, which is unfiltered.

    Good job there little bro.

I was thinking I may have some problem with my Spade lugs on my CV6 not fitting into the posts.

There is always a work around but has anybody encountered this and what have you done?

Cool... now we can call you Mr. Smith, too...

    H,
    On your speaker connection question...

Yup, an issue with the ST-70 (and a lot of old gear for that matter).

I've seen mods to 5-way posts that do not involve butchering the chassis... which is the only way to go IMO with a piece of vintage gear.

I've got a link around here somewhere...

Here's one, but not the one I remember that included pic's...

Still no can find the one I'm remembering, but building out from the chassis with mylar boards is the key...

And since you can give up two of the three pairs of positive terminals (the 8 and 16 ohm), you should have the added space you need for the posts...

    Gotta go... Super Bowl time...

Not to start anything or harp on you or anything, but you implied that you knew it when you didn't cite a source for the information (IE- a link to the page you got it off of).

Point is, you did the work to search when everyone else just sat and waited for an answer :D

Congrats on the new amp! Looks like this was the inspiration for the VTL "L" amps as well.

There is a seller on eBay (in HK as I recall) that occasionally offers barrier strip adapters for Marantz/McIntosh/Dynaco. I just did a search and don't see any listed at the moment. The adapter creates a 3-way binding after being installed on the original lugs to allow for normal spades, bananas, or bare wire. No chassis modifications are required and the adapters look to be very well made. I'll keep an eye out.

    Enjoy!

Not what I mentioned above, but very well made with quality components and sexy for a classic amp like yours:

Oh, and BTW - I made a set of speaker cables for my ST-70 by using Radio Shack gold-plated spades and some old Esoteric Reference wire laying about. I used aviation shears to trim the outside diameter of the spades a fuzz, then gently closed the gap on the spades to fit the Dynaco terminal strip without touching adjacent tap screws. The speaker end is terminated with dual bananas (again from Radio Shack) cinched on bare wire.

Ya know I been sitting on Polk Cobra Cable for a while. I have wanted to use it in the worst way but only in the right application and this may just be the ticket.

Cobras kill full range amps... Not sure your new toy is one... but not sure it isn't either...

That Outpost adapter is pretty neat. I can imagine what the other that mounts on the chassis looks like as well. Drawback is both add an extra connection point.
