i have an idea for a project for my office computer. i want a set up that will have good sound quality at low volumes. i was thinking a small speaker project, perhaps with a full range driver and then build a small DIY powered sub, with the speakers driven with that little T Amp i keep hearing good things about. any opinions from experience how that will sound?

That should sound great, I did a computer speaker project with the Pioneer 4" buyout drivers and the T-Amp and it sounded awesome, even without being augmented by a subwoofer, make sure you check out http://www.diyaudio.com
    good luck,

would something like this be applicable for this type of project?

also, is cabinet size such a big factor with these full range drivers?

That would be fine, however if you are looking for casual listening, I would suggest this one...

You can order 4 with money you find off the side walk, build a box 1 cubic ft. Internal Dimensions, and get bass extension to around 50 Hz, it's impressive, and I think they soiund great.
To answer your other question, small speaker as such generally will perform best in larger box tuned low, Large relative to the Vas and low relative to the Fs. It's fun to tinker with design, try something along the lines of WinISD if you already are not doing so, its great program to get you pretty close to what you want, good luck with your project,
