Watched Matrix Reloaded in HD!

Watched it last night. If you've got HBO HD, be on the look out. The picture quality is amazing. Its a big step up from the DVD, the detail on people's faces really struck out at me.
The negatives: HBO apparently zoomed in enough to get rid of the black bars, which would mean we lost a few inches of picture on the sides. (If you don't like black bars, this would probably be a plus for you.) If you have never watched the DVD then you wouldn't have known it was zoomed in, there was no loss in PQ.
Sometimes there was macroblocking, however, it was rare enough that it didn't detract that much.
This gets me really pumped up for HD-DVD, or green ray or whatever.;)

I would love to know what their process is. -

Amen! I would have preferred the "Real World" being a Matrix within the Matrix, that would have made more sense then Keanu Christ Superstar. -
Better yet... half way through Revolutions, when they're in the main hall with all the Centinals coming in. Have them win and a huge party. Done and done. That's where I turn off the movie and call it MY ending to the Matrix... hahaNever kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

There are actually a few thousand movies that have been mastered to high definition standards now. The new conversion of film stock to digital usually results in a digital archive that's far superior in resolution to any current television-viewed standard. DVD, HD-DVD, and HDTV formats downsample from the digital archive. Sony Pictures had their own mastering studio for the last several years before contracting out their remaining remastering work recently because it's more cost effective. A lot of the second releases of movies on DVD that are coming out now are the result of movies finally being properly mastered in a better HD digital archive before they are converted down to the DVD standard.
Most of the movies shown on HBO are true HDTV broadcasts. Check out HBO's Web site for their programming schedule. They designate their high definition programming as "True HDTV" on the HBO-HD channel listings. The problem with real-world resolution over DirecTV is compression of the HD signal because of bandwidth limitations with DirecTV's satellites.
I suspect HD-DVD will look far superior to current HDTV broadcasts when it gets here because there won't be compression of the high definition signal.
By the way, Matrix Reloaded can also be seen converted into an IMAX film format. Whoa. Part of the reason the Matrix sequels look good visually is that they used high definition digital cameras for special effects shots, at very great expense during filming. -

"The spools advance slowly, one frame every four seconds, which is how long it takes the Imagica to scan across a frame 4,000 times a process known as 4K scanning.
During the scan, the machine creates a digital replica of the frame, consisting of 4,000 horizontal lines of data."
