MM6500 have a carbon cone. A lot of the Polk guys think they sound better.

Ive owned both the Carbon and the MM6.

Personally I think they both sound great but Ill give the nod to the MMC6500 and here is why.

The MM6 out of the box doesnt sound its best mainly because the tweeter is way too loud. The attenuator on the x-over just isnt enough. However you bi-amp them like I do and with a little tweaking they sound wonderful. But, my 2nd little ****, the MM6 x-over isnt set up for bi-amping so you have to run the mid full range. This is bad cause the mid is very harsh playing frequencies in the high range at loud volumes. You can get a 2nd set of x-overs but they are $100 a pair

The MMC6500 is better tuned I think. Right out of the box, they are ready to go with little tweaking and sound awesome. Very clean and super detailed. I think the MM6 is a little more natural sounding but the MMC is great nonetheless.

My opinion, the MMC6500 is better due to its better x-over and better out of the box SQ.

macleod - build your own passive X over from a 2 dollar radio **** shack through-board and 15 bucks in high quality caps and ferrite coils.

    peachy then...

Ya know Vin, that aint a half bad idea but I thought a "homemade" x-over would be of poor quality.

Is it possible to build one that is high quality and can be done with someone of my limited abilities?

Dunno. Never tried it. Why solder when youve got duct tape?!? :D

I wish Kim would just give me a smokin' deal on a set of MM6 x-overs. Ya know, for being such a loyal fan and all around cool guy! :D:D

    Macleod,

If you buy axial non-polarized high quality electrolytic capacitors and ferrite core high current inductors then yes you can build a crossover that is just as good as the average "come with the set of speakers" crossovers.

When you get into super high end, they'll use precision choke coils instead of standard plane jane inductors, but all things considered, yes you can build - for about 10 bucks - a great set of crossovers.

the only "downside" is that they would be in a plane jane little black box, instead of in a nice fancy logo-stickered piece.

I you dont want to task it - tell me the exact model of speaker you want it built for - how many sets of speakers you wanna use - and whether its for woof, tweet, or both (or if you want separate inputs for woof / tweet so you can bi-amp it).

i can give you a cost then based upon what materials i'll need. You're not looking at much though.

Here's the thing about making your own crossovers:
Most crossovers aren't the simple 24db slope or whatever at a certain frequency. There are generally other components to tweak the sound a little bit and definitely makes a difference.

Yeah thats what Im worried about.

Thanks for the offer Vin. Ill look into building my own or seeing what else I could come up with.

there's only so much **** you can put in line / parallel w/ a speaker before u start **** it up.

adding high value resistors will decrease the frequency response overall by a certain degree... hence "-3db, 0, +3 db"...

    0 is actually +3, -3 is 0, and -6 is -3

pull apart a momo xover - all you have is a couple caps, a coil or a solid inductor, and possibly a resistance...

do it up baby - you'll make yourself proud.

    I may.

Im using the MM6 x-over for my tweets so all I need is a single coil to low pass my mids at 3500 Hz. Right?

I could install that near the mid in the door and nobody would be none the wiser.
