I have had some very good advice lately in regards to adding an 2 Ch amp to my system. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V1500 that puts out 120w per channel. I am currently using 5 speakers (2 Front, 2 Surround, 1 Centre)I. If I add an amp (120w/ch), why can I expect better sound out of my front speakers for 2 CH stereo. Is it actually taking some of the load off the Yamaha? Thanks Folks.

do a simple search here on the forum, many posts about this.
But yes it will sound better, it will take some of the load off the receiver.Dodd - Battery Preamp

The idea is that the amp you use will be of greater quality than the one in the receiver. Thus a better sound.SDA-2a, Anthem Pre-2L, Anthem Amp 1, MF A324 DAC, Rotel RCD1070

So if my Yamaha is delivering 120w to the front, should I look for more than 120w/ch?Michael

Not all 120 Watts are created equal. You will always get better SQ when you are going with a seprate Amp rather then a reciever. Any stereo amp by NAD, ADCOM, Carver and Rotel etc will sound better then your receiver even if it has lower # of ratted watts on specs.
let us know what speakers you are using and we can recommed an Amp accordingly.-izafar

Not necessarily. Chances are your Yamaha is not delivering a TRUE 120 watts. Just look for a higher quality amplifier. Most amps (of any power) from the likes of Rotel, NAD, Adcom, etc would be an improvement over the yamaha amplifier section.Originally posted by janmike

It's not more power that you need, but better components. A seperate amp (provided its a good one) will give you better fidelity overall. Most people can get by with as little as 65 watts/rms in most cases.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Source: Rotel CD14MkII CD Player - Speakers: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

jm,
Both produce well regarded amp lines.
Both utilize high current designs (the reason folks can as steveinaz put it, "can get by with as little as 65 watts/rms").
Either will wake up your mains to a greater extent than your Yammie.More later,

What's your source? Focus on that, its the most critical link for two channel reproduction.
