Do you guys think the Magnavox 51" at Wally-World is a good TV? I realize it's only "HDTV ready" and will require a tuner later on, but $992 for 51" is kinda hard to pass up...your thoughts?

I was also considering the 47" Panasonic at $1184, but I'm pushing the envelope at a grand...

If that's the one I think it is, it sux! Is it all black, with a rectangular control area on the right side?

ps. If you get cable service, you don't need to buy a seperate HD tuner.

    Probably, Model: 51MP392H.

    What is bad about it?

If I were in the market for another TV, I'd look at what features a company leaves off a unit to keep costs down compared to competing brands. Things I'd look for in a RPTV would be number of component inputs, HDMI/DVI inputs, size and quality of projection lenses, automatic/manual adjustment of RGB lenses and number of points for calibration on the screen. It looks like the Magnavox has only one component input. Warranty might make a difference too. If something is only covered for 90 days, I'd pass. Picture quality shouldn't make much difference in the same price range for low budget TVs.

Interesting that WalMart has the Pioneer 533HD5 for under $1500. When I bought mine three years ago that TV was selling normally for $3500. I thought Pioneer had taken that off the market or upgraded it, but it seems to be the same as mine.

The PQ isn't as good as others. No protective screen, if you've got a dog or kids this would not be good.

When I was trying to make the picture look good, if I recall correctly, it had very few points of convergence.

Its probably been six months since I last played with it.

    I think I'd rather have a $1k 36" tube, than that TV.

Check out a Toshiba 51HX84...they are pretty cheap, not as good as last years 83's but still a very good set, and hold a remarkable value.
