Tweeter good?
OK, how can you physically tell if a tri-lam tweeter is blown? I ask this because I was about to pack up my RT25i's for shipping and noticed what I think is a little tear in the upper portion of the tweeter. Thing still sounds great so I'm not sure what's going on with the tweeter. Still useable? Or should I replace the little sucka? Anyway, here is a pic. The tear is in the circled part.

The only way I think it would be possible is to listen for distortion with only that speaker hooked up. That way you're only listening to one set of drivers, so the treble distortion will be easier to hear.
You say that you're packaging them for shipping.... did you sell them? If so, you definitely have to disclose that info to the buyer. If there is a tear, I would give the option to the buyer to have the driver replaced. If it were me, as long as it still sounded fine, I'd keep it in 'til it croaked.Ludicrous gibs! -
Yea, I had 'em sold to fgr41. Waiting to here back from him. And thanks.suds, suds and more suds!

The only problem with replacing it is you'll have to do them both. Unless you can find one other than from Polk. Sadly, they aren't going to be made anymore, if you're lucky they might have one on a shelf.
The replacement is not going to be the same construction, and with the tri lam, I think you'll be able to tell... -

Wow, this is discouraging news! Both my systems will be based on the tri-lam tweets because I love their sound.
And what is the construction difference between the originals and replacements?

The replacement tri-lam is the silk from the RTixxx line (RTi70)
If it sounds fine, etc - its PROBALLY just a surface scratch -
If you take out the tweeter, and twist the magnet.... the dome/face will come off, and take a flash light and shine it on the dome and see if the light passes through...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Sid, I'll check that out. Not sure if it really is a tear...hopin' just a scratch. Bothers me though...don't know how the hell it got there in the first place.suds, suds and more suds!

Hey Sid, thanks. Took her apart and the inside of the dome is in perfect shape. And no light shining through. Just a scratch dude.

glad it all worked out man!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

i don't know anything about tweeters or how they work or what sort of problem the damage that you have might cause, but...
you might try listening to both speaks in mono at extreme nearfield (something along the lines of where you can't see the left speak with your right eye and your right speak with your left) and try to kill sidewall and floor reflections, including reflections from the left speak to your right ear and vice versa.
listen for a stable solidly centered image. i mean, you might notice on delicate passages (or possibly better, delicate material buried within harder driving passages) that hit a variety of high frequencies that the image cups and sort of forms a C shape as the frequencies sweep through the spectrum or sibilance that is weightier on one side or the other. after you know the pattern, swap left and right speak positions to confirm that the results aren't hardware, room, placement or [uhg] hearing problems.
it will help if your source has a feature that plays a short passage continuously.
make sure no one that doesn't have this disease is around, or they'll think you've lost it for sure.

scottinNJ, I did hook them up to the 2 channel system to put on a listen but didn't get quite as involved as you suggest. It will however give me something to do tomorrow to drive my girl even farther into the state of insanity that I have induced with my incredible addiction to this hobby.suds, suds and more suds!

you don't have to fool around with killing reflections. it just might make it easier to isolate a problem.
