DYI sub, What amp should I use

Alright guys dont want to beat a dead horse, But there is a lot of new stuff on the market now, And my question is what kind of amp should I use and speaker for my DYI sub, I want the freaking thing to shake and rumble my house, Also what is better ported or sealed for what I am looking for, Downward fire ? Please no links I think I hit a lot of them, There is a boat load of smart people on this site and I value your input. My reciever is a Denon AVR-3805.

Thanks for all who have input. Keep in mind DEEP and LOW, It will be for my HT.

Thanks

ported would probably be better for HT, and any high powered amp is good as long as it can handle the ohm load of the driver you use

Check out the Adire Tempest, it's a 15" DVC. I built one into a ported box with a 250 watt plate amp and love it. A few threads down I posted it's frequency response if you're interested in how low it goes.

how you design your sub has alot to do with the room it will be in. how big is your room? what drivers are you looking at?

you should get a box building program that will let you put the small parameters of the driver in and will automatically calculate things for you like enclosure size, port length and give you an fr curve.

for a sub a good pro amp with high power would be fine. crown and samson are good names. check out parts express for plate amplifiers and crown amps too. ive never heard a sub powered with an amp like a parasound which is geared more towards quality then quantity so i dont really know how that would effect things. i imagine that youd be better off with a high powered pro amp then a lower powered quality amp.

i had one called box plot but i'm not sure if it was any good and i don't remember where i found it. google it and see what ya come up with. win isd is also a program i think but im not sure if it plots boxes or just makes fr curves.

you have a pretty big room, i wouldnt skimp on the sub. adire makes nice drivers, as does stryke audio.

how much do you want to spend?

Adire has plans on their website for their woofers. And for $1000 you could build two if you really wanted to reduce your house to a pile of ruble.

The tempest can go plenty deep and loud enough for just about anybody, model a box with WinISD, you can do some really cool stuff with it.
I've designed a 12 ft^3 at about 18Hz I think that was 15-240Hz +-3dB (Theoretical, without roomgain) That will most like unseat your house off the foundation. Parts Express has good Plate Amps you would like to look into, along with everything you may dream to do DIY,
    Parts Express Plate Amplifiers.
You can get an Amp for about 300-400 dollars, a sub for 150 (Tempest) wood for about $40-50 (3/4 or up is a must) and finishing, paint (10-20 bucks) or vinyl (Parts Express also, about 25-40 for what you are doing, and then 20-40 bucks for misc. stuff, and you are looking at a $2000 store bought sub (If not more.) for only 650-700 bucks!
    good luck on your DIYing,
    Matt
