In the Northeast, we got NAILED last night with 2+ feet of snow.

I haven't yet ventured outside, but these are some pics from my front window, and also of my back door... and they say it's supposed to snow until mid-afternoon!
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

The reason that nobody cares about Indiana when it snows is because NOTHING HAPPENS IN INDIANA until May when the Indy 500 runs. They care about the northeast because six of the country's if not the world's largest cities are located in that region and there are roughly 10-15 major ports for importing and exporting goods in the northeast. When those ports have had to shut down, they have actually caused stock prices to drop. Not to mention that the northeast is the most densly populated area of the country. Now please let us know what happens in Indiana that can't wait a day or two for roads to be cleared and snow to melt?

We are in a state of emergency here since about 7 pm last night. The only reason for it was so that people would stay inside and not be driving down the roads so the plows could clear them. It should be lifted by early afternoon today. People are driving all over the place already anyway. We only got about 14-15 inches total.

Same here in Boston. The Mayor has declared a State Of Emergency for Boston. No school Monday & Tuesday. He has asked businesses to consider closing so that the plows can do their jobs. Boston will top out at around 24 inches. The Cape is still getting clobbered and will probably top out around 30 inches.

If I stepped out my door right now I'd be up to my hips in snow thanks to all the drifting taking place. My job tells me to use my best judgement since it doesn't close for anything. Well my best judgement tell me I have at least 1 day off!!!:D

I'm house sitting my dad's 'Cabin' out in the sticks for the week and it's like the Shining out here! I couldnt' get out until Sunday when my uncle came and plowed. Our Driveway is 1/4 of a mile long so it was freakin' weird for awhile. The drifts make it impossible to get out.

I should have pics when I get home.

15-16" is enough to be a pain in the **** around HERE. It's freakin' real enough when you're humping it around.

I'm not sure I would willingly live where they have 15' of snow routinely, and can't figure why anyone else would. More power to them.

With 4WD, Saturday was good day for errands... At least people up here know not to drive 70 in the snow like the special ed cases I've seen in Dallas after ice/snow storms...

As for who would live there, have you seen South Park? It is as much a documentary of those people as "King of the Hill" is of blue collar Dallas.

I've me wonderful people such as "The Angel" and "Crazy Wolf Lady" by visiting. Truly a breed apart. More wacko's per capita then just about anywhere...

Yeah but see, you don't live there and neither do we. The problem isn't the snowfall itself but rather the gross inability of the local municipalities to handle the removal in an efficient manner. On top of that it's the asshats that run around in it for needless errands just because they freak themselves out about BS. If it's not them it's the "macho men" in the SUV's that think the snow can't stop them because they have a big bad 4x4! So they go out all hopped up in thier little **** syndrome driving like a putz on ice and snow. Then when it comes time to arrest thier rapid movement, the dumbo rays wear off and they realize that they have a 4x4 but they also have 4 wheel brakes...just like the rest of us. Then they plow into some poor schmuck who was just trying to get home from work to his family. Either that or they are sliding off the sides of the roads and getting stuck and causing more problems.

We were under a state of emergency. That means that ONLY emergency personnel and snow removal people should be on the roads. Businesses should ONLY have essential workers in work and retail places are urged to shut down to aid snow removal. Does that happen? Hell no. These asshats run around everywhere anyway and they can't stay off the roads to let the plows properly clear a path and we get half assed snow removal. Then again, I'm not sure that un-molested roads will aid the moron plow drivers in thier ability to do a decent job.

Well, my wife did live there for 18 years as do my in-laws... So what was your point? ;)

Only restrictions areound here had to do with parking on designated routes. Fortunately people here seem to realize that 15-20 MPH is more than enough speed for the highway and not 70.

15" is pretty decent but I've never seen a true state of emergency for that before. Seemed quite odd. Only saw state of emergency for snow in CO in 1982. (3-4' or so in a day)

We get 1" or snow per year, 6" on a bad year..

However, we usually get hammered with ice storms every once in a while, 2 years ago was terrible. Spent like 2-3 weeks picking up trees...

    UGH, I hate winter!

I really don't understand this extreme hatred of anyone who drives something with 4 wheel drive. Wake up - you live in the Northeast, we get snow, smart people buy a vehicle that can handle it. We can't all just hide indoors until the roads are cleared. You're insulting everyone who buys the right vehicle for their climate? Are you serious? There's snow on the ground up to 5 months of the year here - that's almost half the year. Seems logical to drive something that can navigate in the snow, doesn't it?

I drive a 4x4 pickup, am I a meathead? Hardly, I'm a freakin dorky computer nerd. I also have occasion to carry things around a lot, so having cargo space is helpful to me. Also, as I said above, I'm smart enough to know that it snows around here, and if I have to go to work, or go get MILK or something, I want the ability to do so.

And anyone who knows how to drive knows that four wheel drive DOES actually help you stop a bit - ever hear of downshifting? Just beacuse you have a 4x4 doesn't mean you're a moron, or that you drive fast. I drive very slow in inclement weather, and as such haven't had an accident since the first year I had my license.

I think what JStas was getting at were the idiots in the 4x4s that think that 4 wheel drive means you can drive like a jackass.

The fact is that when you can't stop it's better to be in a 2 wheel drive car than a heavy **** truck or SUV. 4 Wheel drive is great for getting through snow and out of a ditch and rough terrain, but it doesn't do jack crap if you don't have traction.

In that respect I agree with him. Those people are morons.

My whole family has trucks and SUVs and I only have a car because I can't afford the F-350 I want.

If the hatered was really at people in trucks or SUVs than that is just plain stupid.

Stupid drivers are stupid drivers no matter what vehicle they're in. The ignorance of many in the 4x4 crowd is amazing, though...

Yup, Freshman year of College after a pretty good snowstorm a guy volunteered to drive us all to class in his brand new, tricked out Ford Bronco. Pulled out and started driving about 35 MPH on an unplowed, 2 lane road. The people who had been in the snow before yelled at him to slow down. He just stated that he had it in 4WD and had big **** tires so he was OK. (Nevermind that the tire treads are now so stuffed with compacted snow that they are giant rolling ice balls.

Needless to say, when he tried to stop, his Bronco became a toboggan down the hill and we stopped 3 blocks later. He didn't "get" why his 4WD didn't stop. Needless to say, we walked back home and he flunked out of school.

If it's obvious that you do not drive that way then what reason do you have to take offense to any of it?

I don't own a 4x4 and I live in the northeast. Does that make me stupid? I don't need fancy drivelines to compensate for poor driving ability. I have done fine all my life with 2 wheel drive. In fact, I am currently driving my Lightning in this weather. It is snowing now too and I am still at work. I'll get home just fine when it comes time and I can gurantee that I will have some jackass or another in an SUV tailgating me the entire way.

If you drive sensibly in the snow then there is no reason to be upset about anything I stated. If you don't then you deserve what's coming to you, I just hope your don't take anyone else out with you. But all the fancy drivelines and big, expensive tires do abso-friggin-loutly NOTHING on ice. Just as what was said already, no traction means no traction, 4 wheel drive or not.

I don't have an extreme hatred of anyone that drives a four wheel drive vehicle. All of my friends except for 1 has some sort of 4 wheel drive vehicle whether it'd be AWD or a true 4WD. I have an extreme hatred of **** and posers because I have to constantly deal with thier assinine behavior. I live in NJ, we have more **** per capita than any other state. I actually prefer rear wheel drive in the snow because, unlike 4 wheel drive, I have less of a chance of the wheels that do the steering to break traction. I guess I should "wake up" though 'cause you know, you NEED 4 wheel drive for the snow and I guess that the 70% or so of drivers in the northeast that don't have 4 wheel drive should also "wake up" too?

I can drive in snow. I enjoy driving in it very much! What I also know is that if I don't need to be out to be **** around with a MILK purchase then I'll just stay put until the plow people get a chance to do thier jobs. No matter how poorly they are done. On the other hand though, I am considered essential personnel at work and if I get called in, I'm going, 4 wheel drive or not. Then again, the ambulances I drive don't have 4 wheel drive either. Should we "wake up" about them too?

So basically, the point you missed because you were too concerned about yourself is that if you don't have an honest NEED to be out in it, 4 wheel drive or not, then stay the hell home! You're only going to get in the way and MILK is not an honest NEED. If you have babies, they shouldn't be drinking milk anyway. Toddlers and small children can survive a day or two without it too. If do have to go out, there is no reason to be endangering the lives of others with your driving. Four wheel drive or not.

Oh and so far, it looks like you are the only one insulted. I know there are other 4x4 owners on this board and they all seem to have gotten the point. I think Demiuge is a 4x4 owner and he isn't all bent out of shape like you. Then again, he "got the point". Unless my commentary hit a little too close to home?

It just seems like every hippy with a Toyota Prius wants to tell me I'm a dick for having a four wheel drive vehicle. If you are not one of those people, then I apologize for taking your comment personally.

The only point I'd like to make is that where I live, I see a lot more 16-year olds in Honda Civics zipping down snow covered roads way too fast than I do four wheel drive vehicles. So I just don't understand the vendetta against them that many people seem to have. Agreed that you need skill to drive, no matter what vehicle you choose.

Now let's all be friends. :)

Hey man, i got classes to get to :p

the drive to my saturday morning class last week was fun

Of course, i do have the privledge of living in the city officially declared the 'dumbest city in america' Fort Wayne IN... i swear it's true, you should see the morons i have to put up with...

Case in point... A girl calls a local rap radio station, she tells the dj that she's trying to find Will Smiths' address, he says he can get on the internet and look it up for her... here's the address he gives her.
    123456789 Sesame St.
North Pole, North Carolina, Texas 12345
She bought it and thanked him... now THAT'S stupidity...
Plenty of asshat drivers too... this kid was tailgating me the other day when it was pouring rain... i'm going the speed of traffic which happens to be 35 in a 30 and keeping about 3-4 car lengths between myself and the car infront of me... traffic stops suddenly so i have to break moderately hard (with good tires, anti-lock brakes, and a relatively heavy vehicle [99 dodge dakota] this is no problem for me) The asshat tailgating me in the honda accord doesn't have such an easy time of it, i can hear his brakes lock up over the sound of my stereo, at this point i realize what might happen as i watch him slide closer in my rearview mirror, his car drifting to the left as he tries to get away from my tow hitch. I relax my muscles to minimize soft tissue damage if he hits but he manages to stop about 6" from my bumper... you'd think he'd have learned his lesson, but NO, we both turn left and as we approach the next light i'm chillin in traffic in the left lane approaching my turn so he flies up on the a$$ of the guy in the right lane and procedes to cut off the SUV in front of me... some people never learn...
MacLeod: I guess youre lucky Polk has such lax hiring standards.

    Josh: Damn skippy!

I agree with all...4 wheel drive 2 wheel, slow down !! A couple things I see, 4x4'ers driving 120Kmh on snow covered roads, sure you have 4wd but your car also weighs a couple 1k pounds more trains have 6 or 8 wd and you don't see them stopping on a dime. on the other hand you have these kids in their suped up pocket racers lowered driving at 120kmh on low profile all seasons...dumbasses. As for living in the north and needing a 4x4 thats not true, you need to adjust your driving to the conditions. I have a 2 wd with snow tires, ig et through all the big storms here. The way I think when it's winter you wear boots and a winter coat mits and a hat, why not dress you car for winter, get snow tires !
