rm20 sub hookup

I am a new member to CP and I really find the site very informative. I recently bought a system: Yamaha RXV1400 7.1 receiver, Yamaha DVD S550 and Polk Audio RM20 surround speakers. While trying to hook up the sub (I don't even know what model this is) using the manual, it didn't mention anything about connecting the sub out from the 1400 to the LFE or to the L & R line in on the sub. All the manual shows was for the front speakers (L & R) to be connected from the 1400 thru the sub. My question is: If I follow the manual's instructions, do I still have to connect the sub out to the LFE or sub out to line in L & R. Also, since the 1400 has a sub out L & R, can I use both instead of only the L out on the 1400. I am very much eager to listen to my system because this is my very first one. Any help I can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You could do the LFE cable or the speaker cable method, but don't need to do both. Polk suggests the speaker wire method because some receivers don't have an adjustable crossover level, and in those cases, you would wind up with a good chunk of bass missing if had used the LFE cable. Your receiver has a good deal of crossover points on the receiver, so you should be fine either way. However, since your receiver has YPAO (auto-setup/parametric EQ), I'd opt for the LFE cable method, because the receiver with be able to adjust the sub level and crossover for you. I think it would be very difficult to get accurate bass response and volume using the speaker cable method in conjunction with YPAO.

Thanks for the quick response. I will do the LFE connection then. But do I still need to adjust the settings on the following:
Phase : should it be norm or rev;
Power : do I set it to auto;
Frequently : how much;
Volume : how much.
Thanks again. -
Set the volume to 12 o'clock and turn the crossover frequency all the way up. YPAO will adjust those internly. Auto will be fine for the power switch. If your sub goes to sleep too much, just turn it on and forget it. Phase depends how the bass sounds in your room. If you want to get more into than that, stop back by.

Thanks again. Now I will start connecting the sub to my receiver based on your info and will test the result. Hope you don't mind if I continuously ask you some questioins because I am totally new to this and just trying to get familiar with the terminologies:)

Normally but not always, if the sub if on the front wall phase set to "0" if near the back wall phase set to "180".
