So what does burn in look like?

I have a 14 mo. old Hitachi Lcd 50V500A. Today I noticed that when the picture is light you can see smudges on both sides of the screen. Obviously it is more pronounced in hd than sd and also appears on dvd's. They are where the bars would be if watching in 4:3 but they are not solid like the bars. They are irregular shaped and maybe as much as 1" wide and run vertical for 50 % of the screen.
Here we go. Don't laugh but they are shaped like tall, blurry, fuzzy, grey totem poles.(go ahead and have fun with that).

Any ideas? Is this burn in? I could post at HTF but hate to deal with all the Hitachi haters that seem to hang out there

......thanks kevin

If it's still under warranty, have it looked at by an authorized repair facilty. Generally burn in is going to have a very distinct pattern or shap that corresponds to a particular image that has been displayed for a long time. Unless you've been watching a lot of boring Totem Pole videos, I'd venture to guess that it's not burn in.:)

I may be wrong but I thought LCD was immune to burn-in?

    Opus....FYI-

"LCD technology is not susceptible to burn-in, which is actually uneven aging of a display's phosphor. LCD TVs are liquid crystal-based, not phosphor-based, so there is no surface to burn-in. LCD TVs do exhibit a phenomenon known as "image retention" that occurs when bright objects have been left onscreen for an extended period of time, but this effect is not permanent."

    Thanks to all replies.

Did a little more research and find these smudges are a common problem that in most cases, mine included, go away after the tv is warmed up ( 30-40 min.).....kevin

LCD's CAN develop problems that look like burn-in from static images. However, they are a LOT more tolerant than plasma or CRT.

Get your TV serviced! I have the same TV and had the same problem, the smudges came and went with no real pattern. This is a defect and there is a bulletin on Hitachis service site. The only fix is screen replacement, my repair guy found the bulletin and fixed the screen immediately. Hope this helps.
