Downtempo

Okay, there is jazz, then there is acid jazz, and then there is downtempo.

Downtempo uses jazz-like instruments but with more hip-hop elements added to the mix. Sometimes female vocals can be heard on certain tracks.

I recommend checking some downtempo out, it's woth the download. Usually it's very smooth, relaxing, and very "listenable".

Recommended artist:

Nightmares on Wax
Hefner (there are two Hefners, make sure you're getting the right one)
Kruder and Dorfmeiester
Peace Orchestra
Tosca
Naked Music NYC

and the list goes on...

Just trying to get the word out on these great artist!!

Definatley Kruder and Dorfmeiester are great, also try:

    Stereolab
    Orbital
    Lamb
    Tommy Guerrera
    Outside
    Dubtribe
    Thievery Corporation
    St. Germain
    Banco De Gia

I'm also a huge fan of stuff by Portishead, Massive Attack, and Lovage, but I wouldn't exactly call that downtempo.

Is this "trance"? Is this "electronica"? I have a secret passion for ambient trace/space music (don't tell anyone). I once tried to get Justin to burn a few Paul Oakenfold CDs for me... Is he in this mix?

I know just enough about this to be dangerous. Fill me in, someone.

Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, Carl Cox...these guys are all trance/dance music, basically what most people refer to as 'rave' or 'techno' type music. Although in actuality, techno is a bit more frantic, with lots of samples, cuts, etc... Prodigy or Chemical Brothers are 'techno'. Then you have the more, relaxing, loopy type music with the hip-hop laden beats, often accompaied by scratching or some mellow instruments. This is downtempo...lots of jazz, sometimes vocals...music you want on when your lady-friend comes over.... the problem with electronica/electronic music clasifications, is so much of it overlaps and is almost defined by opinion or whatever the artist wants to label himself as. Other types include Drum 'N Bass, Jungle, Trip-Hop, Dub, and Ambient.

Yea, his stuff is nice. A little harder than downtempo, but good stuff none-the-less.

Aphrodite has some good stuff also.

Martina Topley-Bird - Some Place Simple
I figured this would be the best thread for this.

I've been looking at this cd in my local music shop since it was released late last year. I finally decided to finally grab it. Nice stripped down versions of earlier tracks. I'm really feelin' this album.
    Anyone else into her?
