I just got a brand new set of R50's and I was playing them at under 1/2 throttle and I think one tweeter blew. Funny thing is if I turn the volume up to 1/2 it will come back on every once in awhile and then go down again. I only hyad them one day. Im running them with a Sony STR-De945. Could this be the problem?I also do not notice that much difference in sound quality from the cheapo panasonics I had before the r50's. They didnt blow above 1/2 volume.:(

sounds like it might be a loosely connected wire to the tweeter. that can happens sometimes... so it may not be blown after all.

Contact Ken @ Polk customer service.. they will help you out.

P.S. I had a friend who kept blowing his tweeters too.. with his 140WPC Onkyo receiver.. over and over again.. I think he played it to loud.. even though he sweared he didn't.

I don't know if this is your same problem.. doens't sound like it. sounds like a loose wire to me.

    good luck.

Thanks for the help. If the reciever isnt puttig out enough juice how much juice do I need. Is that Sony the reason they dont sound all that much better than the cheapo speakers.
I thought Sony was good until I started reading this forum and noticed Sony was not mentioned very much. And now it may be the cause of a blown tweeter.
What do I look for in good sounding recievers. Is THD that important. I guess I want the best sound I can get for the money but I dont know what specs to look at. This would be for HT and music.

    Thanks

if you want to stickwith a Sony receiver.. look into their high end gear called their ES line. there are a few people in here who love their Sony's.. but they are mostly the higher end ES line of receivers. ES stands for elevated series.

Some people claim that Sony's don't sound that great with Polk speaker. I can't vouch for that. It's been years and years since I owned a Sony receiver.

Folk in here seem to like Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, some Pioneer Elite, I use a Marantz with external amps. Not a whole lot of love for Marantz in here either. ;)

You can get into the entry or mid level lines of most of those without to much $$.

But yeah, you may have to replace your Sony with something else? Also.. you can score some great deals on used receivers and save a bundle. Look for demo models, open box, refurbished.

I looked up your Sony. says it's 110WPC built in 2000. so it's not very old.

It's a cheap **** receiver, it'll give you cheap **** sound. I don't think you blew the tweeter. As mentioned, most likely a loose connection inside the speaker.

Thanks Again. I am doing a lot of reading and learning in the forums. HK sounds like a popular one. I actually think they sound pretty good in HT but its the music that doesnt impress me at all. what do you think about just adding an amp. Allthough I dont know if my sony has amp hookups?

The production of sound after a volume increase followed by a slow fade out says "crossover component problem" to me, like a capacitor is leaking the HF back to the amp.

I think this is a return or a call to Ken situation...

Well I removed the tweeter and hooked it up direct to the reciever and got nothing. Took the tweeter out of one of my rt15i and it worked fine. So it must be blown. BY-BY Sony! Just dont know which reciever to get? Thanks for the help.

Not a peep out of the R50 tweet, huh??? Can't figure the fade out you mentioned earlier...

No matter... contact Ken Swauger about sending in the tweeter for a replacement. Depending on your dealer it may be a warranty replacement.
