I've used paypal to make a payment before but have never used it to receive payment. Do they charge you 3% to receive payment? I've seen audiogon ads that say to add 3% for paypal.

Just wondering...

Thanks!

Only if you have a Premium account or receive payment via credit card which requires a Premium account. Payments via checking account to a standard PayPal account are not charged a fee.

FWIW : The charge is .30 cents + 2.9% is the actual charge... if you were to get charged...

Plus an additional 1% for a cross border transaction from Canada I just found out. I'm not sure if other cross border transactions are 1% or more than that. What sucks is that with a Premium account you get dinged the 3% even for payments via bank account whereas, as stated above, you don't for a Standard account. Once you go Premium you get dinged no matter what the payment method.

Not sure where I stand in this, but when I purchased my sub from Mazeroth I paid directly from my checking account to his paypal account and he was charged the 3% fee. Not sure why.......

In my experience, you get hit with the $0.30 + 2.9%, regardless of the source of the funds (PayPal balance, credit card, checking account, savings account, E-Check).

The downside of just having a personal account is that there is a lifetime receiving limit, after which they force you to upgrade. Plus, I don't think you can accept credit card payments with a personal account.

Just a cost of doing business...

Michael, he must have a Premium account. PayPal will try to upgrade you to a Premium account like it's some kind of reward, IT'S NOT, don't accept it.

Exactly! As stated above several times, if you have a Premium account you get dinged the 3% for ANY transaction.....credit card, checking account even from someone else's PayPal balance. It sucks but if you sell alot of stuff, especially higher value items, you increase your bidder potential bigtime. You just get dinged to death!

I received payment from the buyer and it doesn't seem to be charging me any fees. However when I click on limits it says I only have a $500 monthly receiving limit. I received more than $500, so how do I know if I got charged any fees?

As a Seller you can receive up to a total of $1000 in non-credit card payments before you have to "upgrade" to premium account status.

I know this was the rule...

It's gotta start with 'Pay' dummy...get with the program! :p

Now if you would re-word that to something like:

    PayMeAndQuitYourStupidBitchAssWhining

    then it might work. ;)

I've written it off as a cost of doing business. If you want to open up your sales to credit card buyers, it's pricing structure is pretty much in line with the market.

Call around to some of you local cc machine companies, tell them you just got your DBA and want to start accepting credit cards. Some of the 'swipe' machines are actually more expensive.

I think in the long run, by accepting Paypal (as a premier member), I've had a lot more parties (bidders) interested in my items, and my final prices have increased substantially, more than enough to compensate for any incurred fees.

About 70% of my buyers recently have been overseas, and it's working out GREAT.

I think what it boils down to, at the most basic level, is you need to buy/sell smart, and make sure you have enough 'room' to get what you want out of any given item.

For the casual seller, I wouldn't bother upgrading. If you are trying to go hardcore, you should.

    Cheers,
    Russ

If the seller pays the fee for the item then I really have no gripe with using the service and have done so, I never pay the 3% deal for the seller and try to watch if the price has been adjusted up to compensate, however, I would rather pay it in the cost than have the fee hidden from the actual cost.
