I will be upgrading a Sony Projector, which is too dim to make it workable anymore. I was wondering if you guys could give any recommendations. I am looking for something that is > that 3000:1 contrast ratio and > than 700 lumens. I am looking @ the Marantz VS4 (12,000) but it's a little out of my budget.

Regards

    What is your budget?

Also, what are you going to do with your old projector?

Either one of these would be good projectors. The Domino is definetely the better of them. They all have the TI HD2+ chipset.

    BenQ PE8700 @ approx-$4200

    Sim2 Domino 30H @ approx-$7000-$8000.

Here is a quick comparison to some DLP projectors within your price range.

    Projector Central

    Hope this helps.

Which model are you currently using? I've got an HS20 and it's a great PJ.

VTP - HT11 or something, I am not home right now so I can't check.

    I am thinking about this:

for an upgrade. The one I got is 600:1 contrast ratio 1000 Ansi Lumens and does not have DVI/VGA. Let me know what you guys think.

Make sure you audition any DLP pj before you buy it to ensure that you or your family members aren't affected by the rainbows. It's not a real common problem, but some folks do get headaches from it.

As far as DLP systems, I've read lots of really great reviews for the Infocus 7200.

From what I know, the color wheels with more than 5 segments(colors) do a pretty good job of eliminating most of the rainbow effet.

The Toshiba looks like a good projector. It also seems to carry a good price with it too.

Are there any places that will let you try out a projector and trade it in(kind of like Crutchfield)?

Wheel segments and wheel speed make a difference, but to some it doesn't mean a damn thing. Some folks simply can't stand the effect.

    Frank Z,

You are right that it is a good idea to try them out first. That is why I asked if there was anywhere you can get a high quality projector to try them out. Fifteen minutes in a store probably won't let your eyes catch everything to help you make a great decision.

IMHO, I have liked the picture a DLP produces better than an LCD.

    Personal preference, I guess.

well, typically if the color wheel spins at 9800rpm or faster, the rainbow effect cannot be seen by anyone. The effect was only a problem with 6800rpm (I think that's right, 6000-7000 range). Plus, most DLP's have 6 segments which is dual red, dual green & dual blue...

If you're looking for a good projector in your price range, I'd HIGHLY recommend the Sim2 Domino 30. If you want to save a few bucks ($3500ish) go with the Hitachi PR-TJ100 (can't remember the letters... damn model numbers!).
Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

    Home Setup: Sony VPL-VW85 Projo, 92" Stewart Firehawk, Pioneer Elite SC-65, PS3, RTi12 fronts, CSi5, FXi6 rears, RTi6 surround backs, RTi4 height, MFW-15 Subwoofer.

Car Setup: OEM Radio, RF 360.2v2, Polk SR6500 quad amped off 4 Xtant 1.1 100w mono amps, Xtant 6.1 to run an eD 13av.2, all Stinger wiring and Raammat deadener.

hi baked. the way i see it you only have 2 choices with that 4000 budget, the jvc hd3500, it has 800 lumens but it has a native contrast of 30000;1 so itl look brighter in a dark room than any pj with a lower contrast .Next if you need a light cannon go for the epson 6500 then you can use the leftovers for cool adons

And it's JVC HD350 by the way, which is equal to JVC RS10.
