Reality Check

If I'm home, my doors ain't locked.
I used to borrow my dad's axe, hammer, saw, whatever and built cabins out in the bush with friends.
Camped out in tents and had full use of an aluminum boat and outboard motor with no supervision at age 12.
I hit my head a million times and ended up in the hospital once when my bike fell apart while pulling a wheely and I landed square on my face. Lol.
I always think how ridiculous it is to pad kids up whenever they out to play. Live and learn. If you get hurt... don't do that again.
I think in that sense, my parents always treated me with the same respect I gave them. They let me "learn" life and for that I am very greatful.SDA-2a, Anthem Pre-2L, Anthem Amp 1, MF A324 DAC, Rotel RCD1070

I remember when I used to walk in the house, turn on the old tube set, look through the old records and pick one out to listen to. No 200+ channels of TV. No internet. Just the sweet old LP's and a nice drink of milk...
Oh, wait. That was last night!!!

Kids are way too 'babied' these days (this coming from a 22yr old lol) I too remember the days of leaving the house at 9am and coming home at 6 (with a quick stop in for lunch) during the summer... I didn't get a cell phone till i was 20, and i only got one then because between work and school i'm only home and awake for about an hour a day.. this way if my mom, sister, or one of my friends needs me they can actually get a hold of me.MacLeod: I guess youre lucky Polk has such lax hiring standards.

Hey, maybe we're different up here in Canada (Hopefully). But kids still roam the neighbourhood, there are sometimes more kids at the school ground on a snow day then I've ever seen during recess. But the parts that are truly scary are not the bike helmets, and screening babysitters (Both good ideas actually). It's the fact that you can't tell a kid he is wrong for fear of scarring him, you can't fail a grade because of self esteem issues. Once upon a time their were team tryouts and not everyone made the team. The best players made the team, the other kids worked harder to make the team next year, and spent extra time on the go-cart. And the way everyone sues everyone now, I personally came within a quarter of an inch of putting my eye out on a concrete step at my friends house when I was ten or so. I remember being dissapointed that I couldn't go swimming like we had planned, and worried that his mom or mine would be mad at me for not being carefull. We never thought of suing them (Too bad too... his dad had a huge VHS collection and some cool audio gear including a nice reel to reel:D ) Now people can sue you if they fall on the sidewalk in front of your house while it's snowing! I personally enjoy many of the technologies we have in the present day. I just miss the common sense and sense of community from the past. Now to bring it back quickly I propose we all get up tommorow and go beat the neighbours kids so they understand that we're taking back our youth."Sure, everything looks bad if you remember it!"
