Port noise is also called chuffing or whistling. It happens when the mass of air moving in and out of the port is too high for the diameter of the port. Velocity increases to the point where the friction between the air and port is audible. It is very obvious on some subs. It is a whoosing noise that is very annoying and usually occurs near the tuning frequency where the vent is producing most of the output.
Why do you want to know?Graham -

You may not hear port noise while watching an average movie. If you really want to reveal it, just make a CD with bass tones on it.
However, Willow, if you haven't heard it, don't try to hear it.

Willow, as you see, some have portnoise complaint and others don't.
