    Willow,

24 sounded great with DD last night. I have Comcast cable with HD through a Motorola box and optical out to the receiver. Who's your provider?

I almost bust out laughing when Jack pulled the ski mask down to "rob" the gas station...
    Home System:

    Receiver - Onkyo TX-SR601
    Mains - Polk Audio R50
    Center - Polk Audio CS1
    Rears - Polk Audio R20
    Subwoofer - Aiwa TS-W60
    TV - 32" CRT Sony KV-32HS500
    DVD player - using HTPC

Bring on some more Carnivale, that's all I'll say.

I'm starting to think Fox has turned into the black hole of intelligence. Simpsons has dumbed down a LOT over the past 5 years, all the sports commentators are idiots, and the other shows seem like they came from a 10 year old. They got rid of the better "got ya!" reality shows in Joe Millionaire and Temptation Island and replaced it with even worse crap.

I haven't seen the show, but I actually heard news of a lot of PC groups AGAINST it because all they do is hunt down Arab terrorists.... and the Arab community is trying to fight the stereotype that they're all terrorists (good luck, stop bombing things).
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I've never watched 24 before this season, but the first two nights haven't been all that bad. Yeah, there's some stupid stuff in there, but you expect that...

I don't watch much else on Fox, except for Sports and the news occasionally.

I think CBS is my channel for most TV watching...

Oh, I forgot about House on Fox (I think)...we like that show a little...

    Willow,

Since you don't have HD, I think your cable box is only feeding a stero signal to your system (regardless of whether you have analog or digital cable). Only HD-capable cable boxes have the hardware to decode the cable line for both the better video and better audio. I'm not sure how you are getting DD for the Petchannel. Are you sure you are not mistaken? You get discrete 5.1 from that one channel?!!

It's not just the HD boxes that give you 5.1. I had a Comcast box that was NOT HD and I still got 5.1 with HBO and a couple other channels...

LOL...did they snuff him out? I based my comment on the first couple of shows I watched in the beginning, haven't watched it since and have no plans to watch it again.

I hadn't watched it before this season, but I've enjoyed it so far. Probably in 5.1, but I'm running 2-channel right now. ;)

    Willow,

If you do get DD through your box, then the problem may be with the current setting of your receiver. I have done a similar thing in the past myself: at one point I was expecting a DD signal from a DVD or TV channel but got Dolby Prologic II instead. On my remote, there is a button called "SURR" (surround listening modes). I must have pressed that by accident at one point so it switched from the "source" surround setting to an alternate downmixed surround mode (Dolby Prologic II). Simply pressing the SURR button cycles through the settings until it comes back to the original "source" surround setting. Your receiver/remote should have a similar setting.

If that is not the reason, you would need confirmation from another Rogers customer that they are getting Dolby PLII as well. I don't see why Rogers would give you DD for Petchannel and not FOX. Can you confirm that you are still getting DD on Petchannel since the time you discovered you were not getting DD for 24? Also, have any other shows on FOX fail to produce DD?

I don't need to change anything on my remote/receiver it automatically goes to a DD if it's that way. all shows come in as PLII and not in DD except petchannel (which is a free preview for 31 days) looks like I will have to call rogers CS and ask them what's up.

Ok just got off the phone with rogers.....they confirmed I need an HD box to get 5.1...fine and well what I don't understand is he said if I don't have an HD tv I couldn't just rent the hd box for the 5.1 sound he said it won't work on my reg tv . is this true ? and say I'm watching regular Fox and it says available in HD would this mean that same channel can be in HD with the hd box or would I have to tune into the dedicated HDfox channel ?

    Willow,

HD probably works the same in Canada as it does in the US. There are dedicated HD channels so that your regular broadcast channels will NEVER give you high def video or audio. If you were to rent the HD box, you can change to the HD channel, correctly decode the DD through the receiver, but you wouldn't be able to see the picture because you would need component cable to the TV as a bare minimum and possibly DVI/HDMI if your TV supports it. Since your TV is not HD-capable, it neither has component nor DVI/HDMI inputs. Trust me, you would not enjoy renting an HD-capable box and not being able to see the HD picture and only being able to hear the DD sound.

Direct-view versions of HDTV's are quite affordable these days with the only disadvantage being they weigh a ton. My friend bought a 32" Sony KV-32HS420 for $950 before the holidays and wondered how he could have lived without HD. At this point, I think getting an HD-capable TV is worth the price of admission since the programming is getting better. If you are a big sports fan, then HDTV is a no-brainer.

Makes sense then...darn the reg cable box..I should in theory still be able to get 5.1 from the reg box and see the reg picture on my reg tv.... :(
