I just hooked up the 30$ pair of polk SDA-CRS i bough at salvation army with a interconnect cable. WHOA! This is easily the best audio investment i have ever made. I did a lot of reading on old posts about these speakers and what they are all about. This forum is a great resource and i sure am happy with these speakers!

Believe it or not those little CRS's will carry you through some very expensive equipment. They will not be the weakest link in any but the best most expensive equipment around.

Do you know if theres a site with power/frequency handling of these things? I have a sub in my system and have the crossover set at 100hz currently. That was more of guess than anything though.

No, they are obsolete speakers. 60 to 90hz sounds like a good sub xover. 90 to 120 seems a little high.

    TFM,
Great find you made there. Which CRS's did you land, i.e., do they have two (the original CRS's) or one (the 2nd, and last, generation CRS+'s) tweeters per cabinet? Spec's are similar, but not identical for the two models.

Polk's maximum power rating is 200 wpc, but that's a pretty conservative a figure and closer to a true minimum than their stated 10 wpc, IMO.

The only FR figures I have are the useless Polk full range ones, not the -3 dB figures. Certainly you can lower your x-over to as low as 60 Hz as max suggests without fear of opening a FR void in your overall response.

Contact Ken Swauger, Polk CS King, and he'll mail you a photocopy of the owners manual for your model. Inaddition to the spec's, it'll have some set up tips you will likely find wring even a bit more performance out of them.
    More later,

Yeah they are my first pair. They have 2 tweeters so they are old.
I wish i had a bigger listening area than my dorm room. :( I dont think i have been able to feel the full SDA experiance. Could anyone recomend a good song for me to hear the SDA work? So far my favorites are Dave Mathews and Pink Floyd. When i go home for the summer, i will have a nice big basement and a 200x2 MaCintosh amp to use with them.

Very nice find! At that price consider those practically stolen.
Believe it or not those little CRS's will carry you through some very expensive equipment.

I agree with that statement. With the right combo of gear mine sound awesome.

I set up my CRS+ about 10 inches from the back wall and I have plenty of bass in a spare bedroom that I have them set up in.

I checked the owner's manual that I have...weird they do not state the FR spec for the speaker. My guess is that they do 35 hz easy. I don't really see a need for a sub in my setup but you might want to try out a 40 hz crossover or lower and see how that sounds.

When setting up a two channel system with a sub, I use a frequency sweep using bass test tones to find out where the mains drop off and then set the crossover on the sub +/- 5 hz of that dropoff and use my ears for the best blend.

I guess I could do a FR sweep on the CRS+ for you and see where they roll off in my setup. I'll report later.

Yep, did a quick sweep. Pretty strong down to about 32 hz and then it tapers down from there. No need for a sub for me. Prett amazing for a "compact" bookshelf speaker.

The only time I use a sub for two channel is if the mains start rolling off say at 45 hz or something like that. Then I'll use a sub for that last octave.

I just moved my x-over from 90 to 40 and then back to 90. There is no way those can things hit like i want them to. The problem very well may be that i have a 200w amp to the sub and no amps on the SDA's. Still i cant get over the fact these speakers are old and i dont think i should push them all the way down to 40 hz. I cant get enough of this SDA though. Right now i am listening to Ozzy Osbourne- Diary of a Madman and the Drums so awsome. For instance i can tell which crashes are on the right and left channel. I dont know how much of you have even tried listening to his stuff. But, there are some great electric guitar/drum intrumentals.

Ozzy eh? Boy talk about bring back some memories. Yeah, I've got some Ozzy cds somewhere. I think that's when Randy Rhodes was still playing right? That was one heck of a metal guitarist.

I've got my CRS+ hooked up to a B&K 200 watt/channel power amp. What are you running yours on Fresh?

Its a HTR-5740 Yamaha 5.1x100. I like the sound but like every reciever it could use an amp.

Check out the drums on "Over the mountain" - ozzy It is a Very good display of stereo at its finest. I am enjoying listening to all my MP3's over with these things :)
