Vandy's in the cave. Model 2's.

4-way design, rear firing 10" woof (26Hz-35Hz), forward firing 8" woof (35Hz-600Hz), 4" midrange (600Hz-5000Hz), 1" silk dome (5000Hz and up).

They sound great, laid back, but 'right there' at the same time. Bass is solid, and articulate. Great imaging and while not an SDA soundstage - it's pretty damn impressive.

I removed the SRS grilles, because the Vandy's are so close to the side walls, I needed to pad reflections a little.

I'll probably look at upgrading the factory stands, they are however bolted to the bottom of the speakers, very stable.

Russ -- how is it possible that you end up acquiring every speaker I've ever wanted? Those Vandy's are near the top of my list, but would probably score at the bottom on the WAF criterion.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Is that an old school speaker like the SDA's or are they still being made? I'm not familiar with them but wouldn't mind hearing a set.

Cool speakers. Do you have a shot with the grilles off? Sizewise, they look like they might rate WAF.
    Hope you enjoy them!

I owned a pair of Vandy 2s (I think it was the 2s) back in the late 1980s. I loved them, but due to financial problems at the time they had to go. :(

You're right that they're very different from the SDAs, but I remember them having a very rich, deep sound.

The stands mine came with were the ones shown in the cut-away picture, not the ones you have.

I may have to pick up a set just to reminisce... ;)

Let's see... the list now includes you, Russ, myself... and 5 other people ;) Mass market sucks since they like all the stupid crap like asthetics and how it matches other stuff in a room.

Actually, the Vandy 2's, while not mainstream, have been in production for over 20 years and are a favorite of the audiophile press.

GREAT find, a true classic. I was reading how Richard Vandersteen designed those and used the DQ-10, more or less as the type of sound he wanted to achieve (time alignment).

Making my drawers tingle their Russ. They look good standing with the SRS 2's.

Sure helps having someone who understands.

Well, as compared to the mass market, I think we're few and far between. Stupid people... little sticks that Sony and Samsung make will never sound nearly as good as RT3000s or SRTs, etc etc etc. I like my sound to be full range, 2 channel. I don't want a sub to interfere! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Maybe its women and whipped men who keep buying those little speakers. I know my gf almost had a heart attack when I bought my system :D She keeps complaining about the size to friends.

The grilles aren't meant to be removed, regularly anyway. These are built like the old-style AR (ala model 93). The bottom cap has to be unbolted, then the grille sock can be slid upwards, revealing the underside bolts for the top cap.

The tube bowl, Telefunken Smooth Plate 12ax7's I need to test, and get into boxes.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    Russ,
How do they handle stuff like SRV and the like (not super heavy
guitar). Blues, specifically old acoustic Delta Blues should be damn fine on those also since they handle male/female vocals so well.
