New set-up question

This is my first home theater set-up, and I have a question about the tv part of the set-up. I have a Sony STR-DE997 with Polk RM6800 speakers. All the diagrams for the receiver shows all the video components (DVD, SAT, ect...) going into the receiver, the out from the receiver to the TV. Ok, I do not have the new TV yet, I have a 25 year old 25" GE (great picture) that does not have any inputs other than the coax.

Can I run my sound system without hooking up the TV through the receiver? That is the question.

Thank you.

    The only advantage of running your video sources through your receiver is ease of switching from VCR to DVD etc.
    Especially if you have only one set of imputs on your TV. The longer the chain between source (DVD, VCR) and display (TV) the more signal degradation.
    On your new TV, go directyly from your source to the TV and bypass the receiver for video. Hopefully your new TV will have component imputs which offer the best signal tranfer.
    Then use your receiver for audio only.

    Luc,

    Thanks for the quick answer. Great, I can go ahead and hook my sound system.

    Thanks again.

    I have component switching on my receiver, but have never used it. I run directly from source to TV...plenty convenient for me.

    I only have 2 component inputs on my TV. So I use my receiver to switch between HD-Cable and DVD on one input, and I have my computer hooked into the other input.

    :D How about this: I have a daisy chain of Cable composite -> DVD/VCR combo composite -> Computer 720p -> TV (the computer also outputs audio to my receiver)
    Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70
