Polk Audio portable CD Player?

Would you buy an "audiophile grade" Polk Audio portable CD Player if it were available?

    I voted "Yes, if under $75.00". Provided it sounds good. There are a number of very good sounding portable CD player out there for about $55.00.

    CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    IMO, Polk should just stick to making speakers. Seems that when companies start branching out to make various products, quelity suffers.

    I'm sure this isn't always the case, and don't want to start a war of opinions on the topic, that's just my two cents.

    IMO, the key to portable devices sounding good are the ear/headphones..... Over the years, I found I like Sony ear buds alot compared to other headphones out there.

    I'd buy a Polk CDP, sure. Esp if had a dig coax output.

    I'm thinking though...I wouldn't really see any need for Polk to make one of these....but...if they did actually manufacture it, I'd end up buying it anyway...

    The market is so flooded with CD players, it doesn't seem worthwhile. I'd rather Polk focus on speakers, and making better subwoofers.

    I think the poll is flawed. You assume that the max anyone would pay is $100. What if I'm willing to pay more than $100 for a true audiophile-grade portable unit?

    The idea of a portable SACD unit is an interesting idea as well (although fitting 6 analog outputs would be interesting :D:D)

    Nah, you and I and Polk know you could build one hellava Portable CDP under $100, with a real good profit margin still there.

    Remember, there are $39 DVD players out there now....

    And given the current market for speakers (amount of money spent on speakers by consumers is on a definite decline), if you don't branch out from speakers, a company the size of Polk will either not grow or will lose money. You can see Polk is morphing a bit with car amps and the XM tuner.

    Another company that has been booming lately that is also branching out is Adire. They used to be almost exclusively subs, then added mid/high drivers, and now have amps, along with trying to branch out a bit more with electronics.

    Yeah, even Boston Acoustics is branching out to high-end home theater receivers. BA is introducing 2 receivers at the CES right now.

    I was actually gonna ask what the point of a portable SDA unit would have been with just 2 speakers.......*shrug* haven't bought one, haven't heard one.......

    Actually, an audiophile portable CD player (PCDP) may not be a bad idea. Especially if it decodes SACD. I mean, people are willing to spend several hundred dollars to buy a clock radio with CD playback, so why not an audiophile PCDP? Sure, it will not appeal to those teenagers with cheapo PCDPs or those with MP3 players, but I think there's enough of an audiophile market for such a product. After all, if someone can successfully market a $20.00 marker that can improve sound quality of CDs....

    Yea, I dream of the day when I can listen to SACD when I'm taking a dump in Home Depot.

    SACD and the like media, is a niche market and will be for some time....too many confusing formats being introduced for anyone to realize wtf is going on.

    I mean, the uneducated consumer...which is essentially 80% of the customer base.

    Dream on little dreamers, latch onto what you want, just make a choice and stick with it, does it really need endless discussion? Is your singular argument about the benefits of one or the other going to matter to the manufacturers....let me answer that, no.

    I'd like to see more HDCD releases, they sound fantastic on standard Redbook players, and even better on HDCD decoded players...

    SACD and DVD-A are a dead-end.

    What alot of you aren't realizing is that although we see ourselves, i.e. "audiophiles", as a large group, the reality of the matter is that we are a very small group in terms of the "mass market". WE might buy it for the quality of playback, but you average joe doesn't know the difference. How do you think Monster got to be so big? Because the average consumer doesn't really understand enough about the technologies they are buying to know a difference...

    Sorry folks, hate to say it. But were all a bunch of "Audio Nerds". Might as well face it.

    As for me, I'd buy one. But I'm a geek:eek:
