How about making a high-end portable CD Player? You've got the circuitry already developed with the XM tuner, just need to design a chasis and transport. I think there's a niche market for this, as no one offers a high quality portable. Use Burr Brown DAC's, have 2 headphone outputs.

What do you think??

Something with defeatable "anti-shock", a true line-out, and perhaps a digital out.

Exacty. None of the "bass-boost" crap or anti-shock junk. A good, solid performer built for the audiophile.

I was hoping Panasonic would come up with a tubed portable CD player after its tubed car stereo. After all, Panasonic is now using digital amps in its current portable CD players.

honestly though. what's the future of CD's? it would make more sense if Polk introduced a high end MP3 player.. that seems to be the way consumers are going. ie iPOD
    PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I think CDs will be around for a while.

I'm a collector - MP3s, like CDRs, have absolutely no intrinsic value whatsoever. Plus, people like tangible things like cover art and lyric sheets.

MP3s are transient. Hard drive bomb? Oops, there went 147 albums worth of music.

Most people that legitimately own MP3s (i.e., not your napsterites or kazaa monkeys) own the CDs in question, but convert them to MP3s for the convenience and portability of the player. They still have the CDs on a shelf back at home.

Even if as you imply, CDs are on the way out, we're probably talking 15+ years for the format to no longer be offered. After all, cassette tapes are still produced, even though they've been useless for 15 years. Regardless, we're talking MANY product lifecycles before CDs would become a nonfactor, even if some company announced a phaseout today.

Not only that, we're talking about a player for AUDIOPHILES here. Any music format with a lossy compression algorithm can't be considered audiophile-quality (IMHO).

Right now there's not a whole lot of difference in fidelity between a 320kbps MP3, and a CD played on your average (even expensive) portable CD player, so yes, it makes more sense to use MP3s. However, make an audiophile-grade portable an option, and I'll dig out my 40-CD luggable case again to cart around...

    Just my 2 cents.

A CD player from Polk? Kinda like asking for a taco at an Italian restaurant. Stick with what you know and do well.

Not only that, we're talking about a player for AUDIOPHILES here.

Lets' face it, Polk's market is not audiophiles. The market is too small. That's why they're in CC and Tweeter -- for the mass market crowd.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub
