Just for the sake of it, say I had a couple grand or so to spend. How would you suggest I spend that money.

Factors:
Pretty much all of current system is sub par (crappy CDP, R series polks, Onkyo 600, crappy Sony subwoofer.)
Components must be somewhat upgradable/futureproof. I don't want to have to rebuy all components if I want to upgrade one thing.
I am familiar to, and enjoy the sound of both LSi and old Monitors.
Primarily HT use, but music would be listened to more with better speakers. However, due to apartment life, surrounds are not a must at this point.
Willing to buy used.

I have my own thoughts, but just curious to hear what you all think. Have at it.

I have a Consonance Cyber 20 (Tube) Headphone Amp for sale.....and I recall how you like headphone listening.

It's in my showcase pics, or you can read about from the dealer.

go with seperate components.. that way you can just upgrade later what needs to be upgraded. not the whole receiver.

    just my .02

as for specific brand names.. they fall in and out of favor quicker than i change my ahem.. hair style. :p

Yes, def. seperates. I was thinking about a Denon 2x05 or 3x05, whatever with preouts as a possible intermediate step if the money was needed for speakers and components and amps. Make it a pre/pro.

Any specific amp suggestions. Good values? I am partial to Sunfire for no particular reason. Maybe because they are local to Wash. St.

i'll probably get flamed for saying this. but amps don't change much from year to year.. a 20 yr old amp is usually at good as a brand new one of today... whereby a preamp of 20 yrs ago may lack features that todays preamps do.. not that a 20 yr old pre is in any way inferior by any means..

I think a pre amp has more affect on the sound of system more so than the amp does.

I heard the current NAD pre the.. NAD T163 and it sounded so nice.. match it with a NAD amp or Carver or amp of your choice.. and i think you'd be well on your way to a top sounding system.

THe NAD T163 i think retails for $1500 with all the bells and whistles.
