Holy #$*&!

I got myself a PB10 for xmas. I knew that I was missing about two octaves at the bottom end of the spectrum (rt55i and cs400i mains), but I had no idea how MUCH was down there!!!!

I'm re-living my entire CD and DVD collection. It's like listening for the first time again. The LOTR DTS soundtrack is a thing of beauty. And Master and Commander has registered on the seismographs at the local university!

The Avia CD was impressive as well. This "little" sub completely fills my 12x30-foot living room all the way down to 20 Hz. I can't even hear the tone that low, I just feel that everything is shaking. But it's not the volume that impresses me (although this little guy can make me worry about stuff on shelves upstairs), it's the quality of the sound! This is one of the tightest subs I've ever heard. &%#@ Bose!

And when those high-school punks drive by in their daddy's SUV with the "bass" playing, I can just crank my receiver up to a paltry -30.0 dB and blow that little Geo Tracker down the block!

There's no real point to this post, just bragging about my new bass.

So, the system is now:

Receiver: Sony STR-DA2ES
Mains : Polk RT55i
Center : Polk CS400i
Surround : Polk fxi 30
Surround back : Polk csi30
Subwoofer : SVS PB10-ISD

Perhaps not the greatest system in the world, but for a starving bachelor, not too shabby!

I was really close to getting one, but decided to go with the new Earthquake Kompressor S-12..mainly because I wanted to get the tightness of a sealed enclosure (most of my music listening is jazz), and because the dimensions of the S-12 are a little better of a fit than that of the SVS. But if I don't like the S-12, I'll most definitely try the SVS. What's also good about the SVS PB10 (for me, at least...as with the S-12) is that it's front driven, but also front ported in the PB10's case, so I could move it back really close to the wall. Glad to hear you like it, at least I can feel good about my plan B.

You've got nothing to worry about with your "plan-B." I'm sure the S-12 is a fine speaker (I haven't listened to one), but I'd bet good money that you'd be perfectly happy "settling" for a PB10.

Just listened to the Vienna Philharmonic's recording of Beethoven's 7th (Abbado conducting). The difference in sound with the sub is astounding. The timpani swells move the earth, and those moving whole-steps in the bass strings at the end of the 4th movement seem to bend reality.

Just popped in Nine Inch Nails' Downward Spiral. I'm hearing undertones in the synths that I've only been able to hear before on really good headphones. And those drums! *GASP!*

I should probably be sleeping and going to work and stuff, but ^#$* it, I've got a new subwoofer.

    Almost forgot!

I now understand the importance of a separate bass amp. I was surprised at how much the rest of my system opened up as soon as the <80Hz stuff was offloaded into the sub. :D
