RM 6000 setup and DOLBY 5.1

I just got myself a new set of the RM6000s which so far I am fairly happy with.
I have wired them into my system the standard way, that is without following the Polk recomendation i.e sending the front stereo chanel to the Polk sub etc.
I will soon be changing this and setting it up the Polk way, but I have 1 question first.
(in laymans terms)
the Dolby 5.1 from my DVD sends a data signal to my amp instructing it where to send each sound, i.e send this explosion to the rear right speaker, and send this rumble to the sub?
so if I turn my sub off on my receiver wont I be missing out on the specified sub sound that the 5.1 is sending?
this is all kind of made up in my head, so if I am way off, please enlighten me
thanks!

If you turn off the sub on your receiver, the receiver will know to send those lower frequencies to the front mains...
Same thing applies with other speakers, like the center. For year I had no center and watched everything using Phantom mode, where the receiver take the center channel signal and mixes it to the front speakers...
Hope this helps
