Stupid computer question...

I have a 17 inch flatscreen monitor, and was wondering, what should the refresh rate be for it? When I've installed video card drivers, the refresh rate is automatically set to 75 hertz, which makes the screen flicker somewhat. The picture seems to be jittery. The only 2 refresh rates I can set it to to get rid of this is 60 hertz, and 100 hertz. Anything in between, I get flickering. So, what would be better overall? 60 or 100? I don't know anything about this, so maybe someone can help me out. Again, I know this is stupid, and I should probably shoot myself in the foot for asking...

    No, asking if the restart button breaks the computer is stupid. True story.
    The faster your refresh rate, the better, It's easier on the eyes, and allows for smoother playbackfor some medias, such as games. Go for 100 Hz. Just curious, what Brand monitor do you have?

    Always select the highest refresh rate that your video card can support.

    Are you talking about a flatscreen CRT, or an LCD panel?

    Assuming you're talking about the CRT, the flicker will depend on your own eyes. Many people cannot see a flicker at 60hz, but I can on just about every CRT I look at. When I was running my 17", I had to have it at 75hz to not see a flicker.

    On my new LCD, it's limited to 60hz... I don't think that the refresh rate comes into play with an LCD.

    Agreed, go to the highest refresh rate that works. Find the first one that breaks, and go one below it.

    It's very strange that you only have those two options... usually 100Hz is too high, but 60's definitely way low.

    Keep in mind that if you run your monitor at too high of a refresh rate, you can permanently kill the CRT.

    i have a sony 17" trinitron CRT....how do i change the refresh rate on it? its set at 60 hz

    Right-click on the desktop, left-click on Properties, go to the settings tab, click on advanced, click on the monitor tab. Under the refresh rate drop-down, you should be able to change that setting, if not you have to do the following:

    Go to the adaptor tab and click on "List all modes". In this list, they're described by the following- resolution, color bit rate, refresh rate

    pick the one you want :)
