Well, I've been enjoying my Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 for a few weeks now (still have not installed the upsampler - I want to save that pleasurable li'l upgrade for after the tubes have stabilized and I've gotten used to the player... kinda like adding that extra dollop of chocolate fudge on the sundae :D).

Last night the old CD player I had in my bedroom system gave up the proverbial ghost.

Well, horse poopy.

Time to shop for a replacement. I didn't want to spend a whole bunch of dough, but yet wanted something decent.

Then this morning, this popped up on Audiogon:

I realize it's the predecesser to the Njoe Tjoeb and that the performance will not be as good, but with the mods it should be a decent player. Not dirt cheap, but with the mods it would have been $550-600 new with the second set of tubes, so l figure it's worth a gamble for $200. After all, what the heck else would I find in that price range?

The AC cord looks funky though.

More tjoebs to roll. ;)

I'm horrible at reviewing audio equipment, perhaps because I don't have a "golden ear" and have trouble quantifying differences between equipment. This is one of the reasons I'm a bit cynical when it comes to dropping bundles on interconnects - I don't know that *I* could tell a difference.

The other problem is that I changed a number of factors in my listening environment at the same time, so I don't know what to attribute improvements to:

    1. I started using the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb player.

    2. I rearranged my room configuration.

    3. I upgraded to the SDA SRS.

All within about a week of one another.

I tend to be a somewhat passive listener, in that I tend to be doing other things *while* I'm listening to music, as opposed to devoting 100% of my attention to the music itself.

I'm not real happy with my room configuration at the moment (another thread coming to the 2-channel forum), so I don't want to super-evaluate the Tjoeb at this point.

I know it sounds like a cop-out, but right now it is... ;)

Just something I noticed for the first time about the Tjoeb 4000:

This has got to be the fastest reading CD player I've ever owned. I swear that the track display is updated with # of tracks and total running time within 1.5 seconds of the drawer closing.

    Took me by surprise...
